Poem - Types Of Diseases That Lead To Death

How does a person die from a disease?

For sure it is known that they don’t die with ease.
I gathered three pieces for my subtopic,
That can give you a better understanding about it.

My first piece is a poem written about cancer,

It attacks anyone whether you are a teacher or dancer.
It is a disease that cannot be controlled,
Even if you have the most money in the world.

Cancer is a tough battle that displays a helpless person,

As it spreads through your body to destroy and only worsen.
This is a type of war that would not be seen on the news,
Sometimes we win and sometimes we lose.

My second piece is an article about someone named Bill,

Who was diagnosed with diabetes and continued to smoke still.
This voluntary action caused him a life of increased pain,
Which could’ve been controlled but made worse with no gain.

Bill lived a difficult life and died with a feeling of regret,

As he knew refusing to smoke could’ve prevented his early death.
In the end he was passionate to help others quit,
And stop that first cigarette from ever being lit.

My third piece is a short story that is somewhat ironic,

As a woman died of a heart disease that was so tragic.
The reason wasn’t because her heart naturally gave up,
But it was triggered by a shock that immediately made it stop.

The woman thought her husband died and she was set free,
Little did she know it wasn’t as true as it appeared to be.
Soon the view of her husband standing at the front door,
Struck her joyful eyes and made her collapse to the floor.

Apparently there are many ways someone can die from a disease,
Sometimes it’s your decision if it can or cannot be ceased.
You should try your best to not make your condition worse,
And make sure to put your life over any bad habit first.

Presentation Plan

The main topic for my English S.B.A is ‘Death’ and my subtopic is ‘Diseases That Lead To
Death.’ The genre of my oral presentation is a poem following its title Types Of Diseases That
Lead To Death. I have retrieved my sources of information from the Internet which included a
poem, article and short story. This poem is written in Standard English and the techniques
present are tone, mood, visual imagery, auditory imagery and irony. The tone of my poem is
understanding and pitiful and its mood developed throughout is sad and depressing . Visual
imagery is seen when discussing the physical and emotional pain that the people are going
through. For example, it is noticed in the third line in stanza seven, ‘Soon the view of her
husband standing at the front door.’ However, auditory imagery is heard in certain lines of the
poem like in the last line in stanza seven, ‘Struck her joyful eyes and made her collapse to the
floor.’
