Explanatory notes for data tables

Fatal injuries included in these statistical tables are those that the relevant enforcing authority (namely HSE, Local authoritie
judged as reportable under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR).

Table 1 and Tables 3-5 present annual reportable fatal injury statistics to workers (employees and self-employed) for the 5-
latest five-year total. Because the numbers of fatalities for some groupings are relatively small they are susceptible to cons
number and rate. The five-year rate essentially averages out the rate, smoothing out this year-on-year variation.

Table 2 presents the number of annual reportable fatal injuries to Members of the Public for the 5-years 2016/17-2020/21 a
related accident, though the injured person was 'not at work' themselves.

Rates of fatal injury: Differences in the size of the workforce will impact on comparisons of the number of fatalities, both ov
within a year (e.g. between different industry groups). In order to make robust comparisons it is important to consider the ra
dividing the count of fatal injuries by the employment estimate. This is then multiplied by a factor of 100,000 to give a rate p
standards. The source of employment data used to construct the injury rates from 2004/05 onwards is the Annual Populatio
