Delta to Wye and Wye to Delta

Transformation
Prelim Lecture 3
Delta/Wye Transformation
• In solving networks (having considerable
number of branches), one sometimes
experiences great difficulty due to a large
number of simultaneous equations that have
to be solved.
• However, such complicated network can be
simplified by successively replacing delta
meshes by equivalent wye system and vice
versa.
Delta/Wye Transformation
• Suppose we are given three resistors R12, R23 and R31 connected in
delta fashion between terminals 1, 2 and 3.
• So far as the respective terminals are concerned, these three given
resistances can be replaced by the three resistances R1, R2 and R3
connected in Wye .

• These two arrangements will be electrically equivalent if the

resistance measured between any pair of terminals is the same in
both arrangements.
Delta/Wye Transformation

• Delta Connection between terminals 1 & 2

• Wye Connection between terminals 1 & 2

• Since the terminal resistances have to be the same

Delta/Wye Transformation
• By using the three equations:

• How to remember?
– Resistance of each arm of the wye is given by the
product of the resistances of the two delta sides
that meet at its end divided by the sum of the
delta resistances.
Wye/Delta Transformation

• How to remember?
– The equivalent delta resistance between any two
terminals is given by the sum of wye resistances
between those terminals plus the product of these
two wye resistances divide by the third wye
resistance.
Example 1
• Find the input resistance of the circuit
between the points A and B.
Example 2
• A network of resistances is formed as follows: AB=9
ohms; BC=1 ohm and CA = 1.5 ohms forming a delta
and AD = 6 ohms; BD = 4 ohms and CD = 3 ohms
forming a wye. Compute the network resistance
measured between (a) A and B (b) B and C and (c) C
and A.
Seatwork
• Calculate the equivalent resistance between
the terminals A and B in the network shown.
