Mechanical Joints
1. Calculate and check the design strength of the connection shown below. Is the connection adequate for carrying the
factored load of 65 kips.
Tips:
Step I. Shear strength of bolts
Step II. Minimum edge distance and spacing
requirements
Step III. Bearing strength at bolt holes.
Answers:
Shear strength = 63.3 kips
Bearing strength (plate) = 122.34 kips
Bearing strength (gusset) = 91.76 kips
2. The double riveted butt joint shown in Fig. 1 connects two plates, which are each 2.5 mm thick, the rivets have a
diameter of 3 mm. If the failure strength of the rivets in shear is 370 N/mm 2 and the ultimate tensile strength of the
plate is 465 N/mm2, determine the necessary rivet pitch if the joint is to be designed so that failure due to shear in
the rivets and failure due to tension in the plate occur simultaneously. Calculate also the joint efficiency.
Answer: The rivet pitch is 12 mm, joint efficiency is 75 percent.
