The Internet is an amazing thing.

It's opened the door for people to earn full time income or a side income from anywhere in the world.

All you need is your laptop and decent internet.

Teaching online is an amazing experience.

It means flexibility, more time...

devote to studies and family

independence, freedom so you can travel when and where you want .

Seriously it is a life changing.

If you are not thrilled about hustling to work every morning or if you're looking for part time work

there has never been a better time than now to search for online teaching jobs teaching online.

It's perfect for stay at home moms and dads, college students, digital nomads, former classroom teachers or
anyone that wants to make online teaching their full time career.

There are dozens of online English schools and new ones pop up all the time.

Honestly there're millions of students especially from countries like China, Koream Russia and Japan the
market is booming!

This Workshop is geared towards getting a job with an online ESL school.
That means you do not have to look for your own students.

You do not need to spend money and time in advertising your teaching services.

It means that you do not have to stress about how or when you will get paid.

You do not need to worry about what curriculum books or online platform you are using to teach your
students. Everything is provided for you by the school and guys. This is easy.

I am making it easy for you.

You can start teaching in a matter of days.

You can speak English.

You can do it.

Hi guys.

In this lecture we will talk a little about you not you specifically but about the student of this

course in general.

we will not go into much detail about professional requirements because that will be covered

in detail in future lectures.

For now we will just touch on what it means to be an online teacher and if it will work for you.

So who are you?

I don't know but whoever you are you better have a great command of the English language.

That's the number one requirement.

Whether you are a native English speaker or a second language English speaker you need to know English

in order to teach it.

With that out of the way the rest is pretty flexible to a certain degree.

Let's look at different profiles if you like of people that can benefit from this course.

The first category is stay at home moms.

It could be a stay at home mom or dad for that matter that needs to bring in an income.

Online Teaching is not one of those work from home scams that we all have seen from time to time.

It is a legitimate and lucrative way of working from the comfort of your own home.

We all know life happens right.

Kids get sick.

Things need to be done inside and outside of the home.

Our schedules can change day to day.

Many companies allow you to set your own schedule and work at times that suit you.

The best thing about being a stay at home mom and teaching online is the flexible hours.

For example I know lots of homeschool moms are teaching early in the morning before the kids are awake.

Other benefit is that you can work from anywhere.

Set up an office in the corner of your bedroom and you're good to go.

And you can easily earn an average of 20 dollars an hour or more.

The second category of people that can benefit from this course are digital nomads online teaching jobs are
a consistent accessible means for backpackers and nomads to earn an income as long as you have a laptop
and good internet.

You're good to go.

I know of a teacher that changes location every three months or so.

Last year she lived and taught from Mexico Argentina Greece and Thailand.

By working online you can be more in control of your life in a way that is not always possible when

you have a location dependent job our third profile is college students.

Many college kids need an extra income.

They need to spend money on textbooks gadgets new clothes going out with friends et cetera.

Having a traditional part time job doesn't always fit in the student's busy schedule.

Online teaching and tutoring allows both students and tutors to set up times that work in their busy lives.

This makes online teaching a very flexible source of income.

The fourth profile is anyone needing a second income or extra money.

Maybe you need to pay off some credit card debt.

Maybe you need to save for a new car.

Online teaching is a great way to supplement your income.

Online teaching contracts are short usually three to six months.

So if you want to work for a short time make extra money to reach a certain goal and then you can stop

if you like.

The fifth category is ex classroom teachers.

There is a number of teachers that decide to stop teaching at Brick and Mortar schools.

This could be due to disagreements with school administrators burnout due to paperwork overload or a

number of other reasons many of these teachers are very passionate about teaching and would love to

continue teaching if things were a little different.

Online teaching gives ex classroom teachers this amazing opportunity.

The sixth category is we have people in between jobs for whatever reasons people leave their jobs.

We don't have to go into them but the in-between period can sometimes stretch in two weeks and months.

Online teaching offers an easy way for people to earn an income while they're looking for more stable

jobs in their chosen careers.

The seventh category is people that want to make online teaching their full time career.

This is self-explanatory.

Online teaching doesn't have to be a part time gig.

There are many teachers making it their only source of income.

Putting in many hours and earning a very good income and there you have it.

We touched upon some profiles of people that can benefit from this course.

Maybe you fit one of the profiles or maybe you don't.

And that's OK.

It's not a one size fits all.

Before we end this lecture there is one important aspect we have to talk about.

This is the whole native English speaker teachers versus non-native English speaker teachers debate.

We're not going to solve this debate here in my mind.

There is no need for a debate in the first place.

Both groups can make equally good or bad teachers.

It is all down to personal traits qualifications experience and demonstrable language proficiency

but in the ESL world both online and off line strong perceptions that native speakers of English make

better English language teachers.

Many argue that native English speakers have better proficiency they are better at explaining cultural

issues in the target language and are more flexible for topic changes.

Also students can learn the pronunciation of the language better by listening to a native English speaker.

These are all valid points and especially the pronunciation part.

I agree with but non-native English speakers also have several advantages.

First of all non natives understand what it's like to learn English.

Having already done it themselves non-native teachers are able to anticipate students problems and share

solutions that work for them.

Not only these benefits their teaching but it's also helping them bond with their students non-native

speakers have generally...

Also studied the grammar and mechanics of the English language in a more focused way than native
speakers.

While an English speaker might inherently know grammar rules non-native teachers can actually explain
those rules

so students fully understand and remember them.

Another gripe I often hear is that many native English teachers are inexperienced and underqualified

and to put it bluntly...

Not really interested to teach.

Teaching is not their end goal but are taking advantage of the perceptions of the industry.

In any case like I said we're not going to solve this debate and there is no debate.

At least there should be no debate.

A teacher should be assessed exclusively on his or her own merits.

Through my years of teaching and travelling I've met and worked with both native and non-native teachers
with good and bad teachers on both sides.

But how does all this affect you.

Well to put it simply native English speaker teachers have a head start in that the vast majority of

jobs require native speakers.

In fact on tefl.com a leading website for English teaching jobs 70 percent of jobs require the

applicant to be native and it is pretty much the same for online ESL schools.

That's good news.

If you are a native English speaker on the other hand if you are a non native English speaker expect

to get more rejections by online companies or be offered a lower pay rate.

That's just how things are at the moment.

I did not want to discourage you.

It's possible to make as much money or even more money than native English speakers but be prepared

to work harder and prove yourself.

And I know several non-native English speakers who are doing just that.

OK.

There you have it guys.

We looked at different general profiles of online teachers and we also talked about being a native or

non-native English speaker in this industry.

We will revisit some of these topics again in future lectures and also talk in detail about professional

requirements.

See you later.

OVERVIEW 20 Minutes

1-the Online Teaching World

The online teaching World That online teaching world is a huge ecosystem of online colleges.
Online vocational institutions ESL schools tefl academies video course platforms such as Udemy

M O O CS tutoring companies exam preparation centers professional development institutions coding

schools
and the list goes on and on to be precise.

In this lecture we will look at the online ESL industry only.

This is what interests us and this is what this whole course is all about.

So let's begin the year is 2020 and the online ESL industry is booming.

The global tutoring market has reached more than a hundred billion dollars and it is continuing to grow.

English has the potential to generate opportunities strengthen employment opportunities and expand
horizons.

In today's interconnected world countries like China South Korea Japan and Russia have a strong demand

for online English tutoring English language learners are moving online opportunities for online ESL

teachers have been ramping up over the past number of years as more and more students turn to learning

online with geographical limitations no longer a factor ESL teachers can now work from anywhere in the

world a key factor driving the growth of the market is the growth of the online education market in

China the increased per capita spending capacity of the Chinese population and the flexibility in online

education offerings have been key to driving the online education market according to add to fare China.

In 2018 the number of users grew 63 percent to one hundred and seventy nine million and the market value

reach 300 billion yuan.

It is estimate that these numbers will further grow with each year and reach 700 billion yuan by 2025.

Companies like VIP kids, dada, Yuanfudao etc have raised millions of dollars.

Both VIP kid and dada were funded in 2013 and have continued to grow since then.

VIP kid has more than five hundred thousand students in China and 63 other countries and 60000 North

American teachers.

While dada currently has more than a hundred thousand students and 10000 teachers. 51Talk: another

leading online education company based in the Philippines has fourteen thousand English teachers in

North America and other English speaking countries.

Other companies have grown too... companies like Bling ABC, magic ears, and Qkids are also connecting
teachers

to students working on learning English.

The online ESL companies meanwhile are highly profitable.

Chinese students pay what amounts to zzzzzzzz to eighty dollars an hour for the classes significantly

above the fifteen to twenty five dollars per hour that a teacher makes.

There are around 200 major online ESL schools and more are entering the market every single day.
In this environment there are great benefits for teachers.

Now more than ever teachers can pick and choose or to work for a higher hourly pay and receive more

benefits and bonuses.

But make no mistake there are pitfalls too.

In this fluid environment there are a lot of new questionable players to give you a personal example

about five or six months ago I interviewed for a new startup.

I did a demo class for them.

I went through their onboarding and training process.

I spent time and money to decorate my background wall to their specific requirements only to be suddenly

ignored by them.

My emails went unanswered and I was wondering what happened but I soon learned that there were
thousands

of others just like me.

We discovered that the company went out of business and did not even bother letting us applicants know

but hey it could have been worse.

There are occasional stories from other teachers online that have been cheated on their wages by different

companies.

There are claims from teachers that have worked for new startups and have not been paid but there is also

a flip side of that coin.

It's tough for companies to monitor the quality of the education as the number of teachers grows rapidly.

Many parents complain that the teachers vary in their skills and it's hard to make reservations with

popular teachers but it is what it is a fairly new booming industry that is growing rapidly.

Many players see it as a gold rush.

It is the Wild West out there.

But in my opinion this will not last forever.

There are already signs that the industry is maturing.

For example online ESL companies have recently toughened the application requirements for teachers and

the Chinese government is beginning to regulate the companies operating from China.

The US states like California have passed a bill paves the way for gig economy workers to get holiday

and sick pay.

And we will see how this plays out on U.S. listed online ESL companies.

As you can see we are still waiting for the dust to settle in many aspects of the online teaching world.

But one thing is for certain you will be entering an exciting and profitable new world.

2- Advantages of Online Teaching

Advantages of teaching online.

Like many things in life there are advantages and disadvantages.

Pros and Cons.

So in this lecture we would look at six advantages of online teaching.

Although there are many benefits of teaching online I have decided to focus on the six that I thought

were the best. Advantage one.

There is no strict dress code.

Some companies will require you to wear a specific color clothing for example.

for DaDaABC it is blue and for VIP kid it's orange but a T-shirt is just fine.

If you teach with a webcam then of course you must look professional and well groomed but you don't

need to wear shirts ties suits and heels.

You can just put on some casual clothes and sit in your sleepers.

It's a very relaxed way of working.

And did I mention that you can work in your pajama pants?

Advantage two: the money's good.

How much you can earn itching English online is really up to you.

With most online English companies you can work as much or as little as you like.

Which means your online English gig can be anything from a small time side hustle to a very profitable

full time job.

And keep in mind there're very little overheads involved in teaching ESL online.

Expect to start somewhere around twenty dollars an hour.

As time passes and you get better and more confident of what you do your hourly pay will also increase

advantage 3

Making a difference.

It sometimes sounds like a cliché but it's true.

Good teachers can make a positive impact on a student's life.

The students are at home and in their comfort zone to show off their toys their pets their family members.

As a teacher you get to help students of all ages to communicate and about a new culture and expand

their horizons.

The best part is that you as a teacher can see the tangible results of your efforts.

I can't remember how many times a student or parent thanked me for helping their child do well in an exam
or

assignment.

I even had a student achieve first place in a local English speaking competition.

It just feels good being able to share in your students successes.

Advantage four: no additional time commitments.

When I worked as a teacher in brick and mortar schools most of my time was spent on lesson planning

and checking tests.

I often had to take them home with me and spend evenings going through them correcting endless errors

and giving grades.

Those times are over.

Nowadays I don't do anything except my lessons which I love doing.

I don't have to spend time in faculty meetings. I don't have a half hour commute like I used to.

I don't have to clean up my classroom.

At the end of the day or do school paperwork outside of the initial application process the whole job

is teaching all you're required to do show up on time look professional make sure your equipment is

working and teach your heart out!

Which saves a great amount of time and effort.

And it's more fun! Advantage five: flexible schedules you can take holidays whenever you want.

Or you can work like crazy if you wish to.

You are in charge of your time.

Many companies don't have a minimum number of hours per week and some have weekly minimums.

You can set and customize your online teaching hours to meet the needs of your personal life and family

life.

Usually the teachers get to make their own schedule each week by filling in their availability on your

registration calendar.

You can choose when you one time off and whether you want to teach 10 classes one day or just two the

next or none.

If you so desire want to take a long weekend.

You can always teach online for a couple extra hours from Monday to Thursday to offset the extra time

you need to take off. Advantage six: location independence.

One of the greatest things about teaching online is the freedom it affords you.

It can be done from virtually anywhere and time and you're not necessarily tied to your home either

anywhere quiet with a decent internet connection.

will do.

There is no time lost in commuting and the added stress of being stuck in traffic.

Last year I was able to travel to 3 different continents with my family without missing any of my classes

and so being able to earn money while I was on holiday.

I have worked from home, friends homes, coffee shops, restaurants, hotels, and coworking spaces.

I was once unable to have a class from a bar... a very quiet country pub... still.

In conclusion you get to work while you travel meet other digital nomads and work happily from
home.

When you don't feel like going anywhere if you think about it there not many a jobs out there where

you can take them with you where ever you go.

And that's simply amazing.

3-Disadvantages of teaching online:

It wouldn't be wise to look at only the positives.

It's worth considering the negatives too.

Before you start something new.

So in this lecture we will look at some disadvantages of online teaching these advantage.

One Loneliness: teaching online means that you wont interact with people except your students of

course for most part of the day to be honest.

Personally I prefer having friends outside of my working space.

That's why teaching online seemed like the perfect job for me.

But I know for many people it is preferable to be working and interacting with colleagues and friends.

If you are a person who enjoys working in a team then expect to go through a period of adjusting as

you switch to online work.

Finally although for me loneliness is not a problem.

I do occasionally miss those Friday night drinks with my colleagues right after work.

Disadvantage two: lack of routine.

You wake up at 7:00.

Have breakfast shower and get ready for work on the way to work.

You stop and get a coffee and your favorite magazine.

You take a lunch break at 12:00.

You finish work at 5:00.

Then you hit the gym for an hour and on the way home you stop at the supermarket and pick up some
groceries.

This kind can be your daily routine. When you work online...

This rhythm is disrupted.

At the beginning it's great.

You don't need to get up at 7:00.

Commute in traffic and deal with office politics.

After a few weeks you start working in your pajamas.

You take a shower at 5:00 p.m. and they're too lazy to go shopping.

So you start eating junk food and don't exercise and start feeling tired and out of energy.

You don't want to do anything.

It's easy to forget what a routine is.

Only people who are motivated and can discipline themselves every day can achieve a lot through remote

work.

Before you start teaching English online ask yourself if you're able to manage and create your own

schedule.

Disadvantage three: Internet you need to be prepared that your life will depend on the speed of your

internet connection.

That is the most important thing for an online teacher.

You can have bad days.

Students might be having a bad day.

The book or class for your online school gave you for the class could be the wrong level or so many

things that can go wrong and everything can be dealt with.

But there is nothing you can do without internet.

This is something that you always need to keep in mind especially when you're traveling to new locations.

I would love to go snorkelling to some islands in the Philippines but I know that decent Wi-Fi will be

hard to get.

And it will not be enough for me to teach my classes.

We will talk more about the Internet and I'll share with you some very important tips in section three

of this course. Low job security.

Expect little or no work security.

You will not get a pension or a health coverage or accident insurance.

Working as an English teacher online also many online companies operate from China or other places that

have very minimal worker rights.

You could be laid off without a moment's notice.

The company that you work for would go under without you receiving any compensation whatsoever.

It is important to keep this in mind and make arrangements to use the extra money that you make to save

for your own needs.

Disadvantage 5: few opportunities of advancement. as an online teacher.

You make 20 dollars hour now . After two years...

Still an online teacher maybe earning twenty five twenty six dollars an hour not a big difference.

And that's how it works for the majority of online teachers.

Unfortunately there are few opportunities for advancement.

I know a handful of online teachers that get promoted to middle management to handle curriculum and

teacher training.

But 90 percent long line teachers remain online.

Teachers. Having said that, there are opportunities outside of your employer.

Most importantly it is going solo maybe getting your own students or maybe creating your own online
school.

We will talk about this a bit more in Section 10.

And there you have it guys.

This brings us to the end of section 2 of this course.

Next we move on to section 3 a very important section where we will look into very technical aspects

of your preparation.

We will talk about Internet your computer headset lighting and other very important requirements.

You might also like
