ASSIGNMENT UNIT 19

1)Watch the following class video https:// www.youtube.com/ watch ? v =-IkT oxCo9po

about the benefit of video games ,how would you change the class of you had 7/ 8 year
old students ?

Teaching children need frequent changes of activities which are exciting and fun to stimulate their
curiosity ,they generally have short attention spans and get bored easily ,if they just have sit and
listen or if activities drag on for too long .Teacher ‘s role is of primary importance here ,because the
children will look to teacher for guidance and it is unlikely that they will have any motivational
considérations outside of that provided by the teacher ,basically keep it fun ,varied ans at good
pace ,try always to relate activities to the children ‘s own interests ,it is possible to improve the
classroom environment with posters ,cartoons ,children ‘s own artwork

2)Select two of the five factors regarding teaching ESL to children for do children have inhibitions
and fragile egos ? how do adults and children ‘s inhibitions differ ?

Perhaps it is fair to say that teaching children can be one of the most rewarding of all students
classes to teach, children possess an innate curiosity ,which is in itself a motivating factor .Children
‘s widespread success in acquiring second language belies a tremendous subconscious effort
devoted to the task children exercise a good deal of both cognitive and effective effort in order
to internalize both native and second language. The difference between ,children and adult lies
primarily in the contrast between the child ‘s spantaneous peripheral attention to language forms
and the adult ‘s overt ,focal awareness of and attention to those forms ,therefore the popular
notion about children holds only if effort refers ,rather narrowly to focal attention to language
forms

3)How would you approach a class in which there are true beginners and false beginners, what
would you do to challenge the latter but not overwhelm the first group of learners.

The most challenging level in language instructions is teaching beginners, at the beginning level or
even false beginning level your learners have very little language behind them .Teaching beginners
requires special skills and psychology, teachers should have clear realistic aims ,don’t try to too
much ,too quickly, use clear simple instructions, encourage beginners to speak English in class as
much as possible ,teacher should not use the student ‘s mother tongue. Beginners learners are
highly dependent on the teacher for models of language, so teacher centered classroom is
appropriate for some of your classroom time ,pair and group work are effective techniques for
taking student ‘s focus off you as the center of attention and for getting them into an interactive
frame of mind even at the most begining level

4)Can fluency be practiced at the very begining level ? think about a foreign language class you
have taken ? could you have produced anything ,you would call fluency ? if not or if only very little
at what stage would you say fluency goal becomes feasible ?
Fluency is the goal at begining levels ,but only with limited utterance lengths ,fluency does not
have to apply only to long utterances ,the flow of language is important to establish from the
begining ,in reasonably short segment .At this stage it is important to focus on pronunciation work
,intonation ,rythme, stress

5)Investigate the official policy on English ( and possibly other second language) on the
government and educational systems of your own country or a country of your choosing ,are there
unofficial policies in business, educational or social circles ? Do they sustain or contradict the
official stance ?

At Present the US is experiencing a language policy debate ,at one end of the spectrum is the
English only movement that advocates the exclusive use of English language for all educational and
political contexts and that carries an implicit assumption that the use of one's home language will
impede success in learning English, in contrast English plus advocates respond with programs in
which home language and cultures are valued by schools and other institutions ,but in which ESL is
promoted ans given appropriate funding

Language policies and social climates may dictate the statue accorded to native and second
language ,which can in turn positively or negatively affect and eventual sucess in language
learning, most EFL programs are additive since the native language is the accepted norm ,moreover
as the formost international language ,English is usually valued highly as a tool for up ward
modility

6)If you had to teach a business English class to an administrative assistant to CEO of an airport
how could you make these classes meaningful ? how could you get started if your students is a
high beginners ? what would cover in the first class ?

A lot of teachers have initial fears about teaching business English, arguing they have no experience
in the field ,the type of language that learners need is often in areas such as telephoning
,introductions, presentations ,teachers should remember that they are not going to teach them how
to be business people but to teach them English, before you can begin any course you have to find
out what learners want and what they need ,lot of business people still need basic grounding in
English, rather than anything too specific, this doesn't mean you can’t draw on their own work
environment to make the course relevant to them ,often they will know the terminology and
vocabulary directly related th their work but are unable to put it into proper sentence or do not know
how to use it you need to have general understanding of the client ‘s job it will help you to
understand the areas of English that learners require
