In this reflective article that straddles the personal and the pro
sional, the author shares his critical thoughts on the impact of
steady stream of discourse on the native speaker/nonnative spea
(NS/NNS) inequity in the field of TESOL. His contention is th

Therefore, he further contends, it is legitimate to ask what t
discourse has achieved, where it has fallen short, why it has fa
short, and what needs to be done. Drawing insights from the w
of Gramsci (1971) on hegemony and subalternity, and Mign
(2010) on decoloniality, the author characterizes the NNS com
nity as a subaltern community and argues that, if it wishes to effe
tively disrupt the hegemonic power structure, the only option o
to it is a decolonial option which demands result-oriented action, no
just "intellectual elaboration." Accordingly, he presents the cont
of a five-point plan of action for the consideration of the subal
community. He claims that only a collective, concerted, and coo
nated set of actions carries the potential to shake the foundatio
the hegemonic power structure and move the subaltern commun
forward.

These actionable plans are complex and long-term, but if taken seri-
ously, they have the potential to help the subaltern community move
forward. Constructing and actualizing a grammar of decoloniality is
not an easy task, nor is it the task of one individual, or even a group
of individuals. It is indeed the task of the collectivity. It is only the
collective consciousness of the professional community that can create
the conditions necessary for individuals and groups to initiate and
sustain the plan of action sketched above.
