CARL ROGERS’ THEORY ON

PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT

Carl Rogers theory on personality development was

my assigned topic to report in class. As a teacher, the
theory of Rogers helped me a lot to understand my
existence and my students as well. Rogers pointed out
three main points in his theory. First was the self-
actualization of a person. Rogers believed that the
moment one sees his or her ideal self and acts accordingly
with his or her actual behavior, then that person is
observing self-actualization. The moment we dream of
being someone someday (our ideal self), we need to attain
that by behaving accordingly with our goal. And if the
person reaches self-actualization, then that person is fully-
functioning. The second point is Rogers conditional
positive regard. Rogers believed that if a person is loved
and cared without conditions, then that person is going to
self-actualize and will not be alienated by their own self.
If a child cannot attain the desires of the parents, then he
or she must still be loved and cared with a note of
correcting him or her. The last point of Rogers theory was
the unconditional positive regard. In this case, students
must have the freedom to do what they want to do as long
as it is right and for the better. If a certain student does
something that is not good, he or she must be corrected in
an appropriate way. We must always remember that as
teachers, we need not to give conditions to our children
just for them to gain our love, care or trust. Love should
be given without condition and even without a specific
reason.
