DRUG PRESENTATION ON
AZITHROMYCIN
• INTRODUCTION
• Azithromycin is an azalide,a type of macrolide antibiotic. It works by
decreasing the production of protein,thereby stopping bacterial
growth.
• CLASSIFICATION
• A macrolide antibiotic
DOSE AND ROUTE
• Pediatric dose in oral suspension,USP
• 200mg/5ml
• Tab.250mg
MECHANISM OF ACTION
• It prevents bacteria from growing by interfering with their protein
synthesis and accumulates effectively in cells,particularly phagocytes
and delivered in high concentration to sites of infection.
INDICATIONS

• It is indicated to treat lower respiratory infections such as :


• Streptococcal pharyngitis and tonsillitis
• Treatment of uncomplicated skin infection due to staphylococcus
aureus,staphylococcus pyogens
CONTRAINDICATIONS
• Hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin(or)any of other
macrolide antibiotics
SIDE EFFECTS
• Headache
• Dizziness
• Vomiting
• Nausea
• Diarrhea
• Abdominal pain
• Cramping
NURSES RESPONSIBILITES
• Administer this drug on empty stomach before 1 hour of meal (or) 2-3
hour after meals.
• Take this drug as full course prescribed.
• Do not take this drug with antacids.
• Report if severe /watery diarrhea, severe nausea,itching,rash occurs.
• Monitor for and report loose stools/diarrhea since
pseudomembranous colitis must be ruled out.
• Notify physician immediately for any of these signs.
PATIENT AND FAMILY EDUCATION

• Advice the mother not to expose the child to direct sunlight during
therapy with drug.
• Take antacids 2 hour before or after these drug .
• Report onset of loose stool or diarrhea.
• Do not breast feed while taking this drug without consulting
physician.
