Bowel Wash

Child Health Nursing Procedure


Definition

Bowel wash is washing out of colon with large quantities of


solution, to clear colon of faeces.
INDICATIONS
• To relieve low intestinal obstruction, e.g. suspected Hirschsprung disease
(HD), meconium plug disease, meconium ileus or intestinal dysmotility.
• Used as a mode of temporary management in proven cases of
Hirschsprungs Disease until definitive surgery is performed (for 4-12
weeks depending on each case).
• Used in the management of patients admitted with enterocolitis.
• Used preoperatively in patients undergoing closure of stoma procedures. 
• Management of constipation in children

17/01/21 Breastfeed 7 am : Abdominal girth- 34cm

7: 20 am: Bowel wash done inserting Nelathon catheter size 8 with warm normal
saline of 60 ml.

On observation: abdominal distention is reduced, abdominal girth- 31 cm


Wash out result: 45 ml of greenish fluid with meconium

7: 35 am : Baby placed in comfortable position& handed over the baby to the mother
