The Birth of

Rizal Law
● April 3, 1956 – Senate Bill No. 438

(An act to make Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo


compulsory reading in all public an private colleges and universities and
for other purposes.)

● Senator Jose P. Laurel – Chairman of the Committee, he sponsored


and presented the bill to the members of the Upper House (April 17,
1956)

● Main purpose: disseminate ideas and ideals of Jose Rizal through the
reading of his works, notably his novels Noli Me Tangere and El
Filibusterismo.
● May 12, 1956 – Senate Bill No. 438 – unanimously approved on second
reading

● May 14, 1956 – The Lower House imitated the Senate and the bill was
approved unanimously in the House of Representatives.

● June 12, 1956 – President Ramon Magsaysay signed the bill to make it
a law, thus giving birth to Republic Act 1425, also known as the Rizal
Law.

NOVELS NOLI ME TANGERE AND EL FILIBUSTERISMO,
AUTHORIZING THE PRINTING AND DISTRIBUTON
THEREOF, AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES.
