Question 1

owing terms as applied to discrete time signal processing

a) Define each of the following
systems:
(i) Linearity

(ii) Time--invariance
(iii) Causality
ausality
(iv) Stability

b) It is given that the impulse-response

impulse of a discrete time LTI system is {h[n]}. Prove
that the response to any other input signal {x[n]} is {y[n]} where:

y[n] = ∑ h[m] x[n − m]
m =−
−∞
for −∞ < n < ∞ [5 Marks]

c) Determine the impulse-response

response of the following difference equations.
equation
(i) y [n ] = x[n ] − x[n − 2]
(ii) y [n ] = x[n ] − x[n − 1] − y [n − 1] [8 Marks]

d) For each of the difference equations above, determine whether the represented
discrete-time
time system is stable and/or causal. [4 Marks]

Question 2

a) Determine the Z-transform

transform H(z) of the impulse-response h(n) of the following
difference equations:
(i) y[n] = x[n] + 0.5 x[n-1] − 0.5 x[n-2]
(ii) y[n] = x[n] + x[n-1] + 0.5 y[n-1] [10 Marks]

b) For each of the difference equations above, plot the zeros and poles of H(z) in the Z
plane. [5 Marks]
c) If x[n] is given by x[n] = δ [n] − δ [n − 2] , by using the inverse Z-transform methods,
determine the output y[n] for each of the difference equations above. [10 Marks]

Question 3

a) Briefly explain the difference between linear convolution and the cyclic convolution.
[4 Marks]
b) The input sequence x[n] and the impulse response h[n] of a LTI system are given by the
following expressions.
x[n] = δ [n] − 0.5δ [n − 2] , h[n] = δ [n] − 0.6δ [n − 1] + 0.3δ [n − 2] .

be derived from the L-point DFT. [3 Marks]

Question 4

a) Define the following transforms and briefly explain how they are related to each
other:
(i) Discrete time Fourier transform (DTFT)
(ii) Discrete Fourier transform (DFT)
(iii) Fast Fourier transform (FFT) [6 Marks]
b) Briefly explain how the DTFT is related to the analogue Fourier transform.

c) Explain why non-rectangular windows (Hann, etc) are generally preferred to the
rectangular window when using the DFT for spectral estimation? [4 marks]
d) If the input signal to a digital filter with frequency response
H(ejω) = (5 + 2 cos(ω) )e -jω/2 is {x[n]} with x[n] = 3 cos( 0.5 n) for all n.
What is the output signal?. [10 Marks]
