MEDIUM AND TECHNIQUE

MEDIUM
 Denotes the means by which an artist communicates his idea. These are materials which
are used by an artist to interpret his feelings or thoughts. Many mediums have been used
in creating different work of art.
The ARCHITECT uses wood, bamboo, bricks, stone, concrete, and various building
materials.
The PAINTER uses pigments on wood or canvass to create, to recreate reality of nature.
The SCULPTURE uses steel, marble, and wood.
The MUSICIAN uses instrument to produce and communicate a message and
The LITERARY WRITER uses words .

On the basis of MEDIUM, the art are primarily classified as:


1. VISUAL ARTS
 Are those whose mediums can be seen and which occupy space. These are groups into 2
classes:
a. Dimensional or two dimensional arts – which includes painting, drawing,
printmaking, and photography
b. Three-dimensional arts which includes sculpture, architecture, landscape, community
planning, industrial design, and crafts like ceramic and furniture.
2. AUDITORY ARTS
 Are those whose mediums can be heard and which are expressed in time. These are music
and literature.
3. COMBINED ARTS are those whose mediums can be both seen and heard and which exist in
both space and time. These includes dance, opera, drama, and film.
The TECHNIQUE is the manner in which the artist controls his medium to achieve
the desired effect. It is the ability with which he fulfills the technical requirements of his
particular work of arts.

Medium of the Visual Arts


 Visual arts are those that can be perceived with our eyes. The most common visual arts
are painting, sculpture, and architecture.
