Introduction:
The Indian mobile economy is growing rapidly and will contribute substantially to India’s
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) according to a report prepared by GSM Association in
collaboration with Boston Consulting Group (BCG). In 2019, India surpassed the US to
become the second largest market in terms of number of app downloads.
The liberal and reformist policies of the Government of India have been instrumental
along with strong consumer demand in the rapid growth in the Indian telecom sector. The
Government has enabled easy market access to telecom equipment and a fair and
proactive regulatory framework, that has ensured availability of telecom services to
consumer at affordable prices. The deregulation of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI)
norms have made the sector one of the fastest growing and the top five employment
opportunity generator in the country.
This article details the history of telecommunication and the individuals who helped make
telecommunication systems what they are today. The history of telecommunication is an
important part of the larger history of communication.
Early telecommunications included smoke signals and drums. Talking drums were used
by natives in Africa, New Guinea, and South America, and smoke signals in North
America and China. Contrary to what one might think, these systems were often used to
do more than merely announce the presence of a camp.
In 1792, a French engineer, Claude Chappe built the first visual telegraphy (or
semaphore) system between Lille and Paris. This was followed by a line from Strasbourg
to Paris. In 1794, a Swedish engineer, Abraham Edelcrantz built a quite different system
from Stockholm to Drottningholm. As opposed to Chappe's system which involved
pulleys rotating beams of wood, Edelcrantz's system relied only upon shutters and was
therefore faster. However, semaphore as a communication system suffered from the need
for skilled operators and expensive towers often at intervals of only ten to thirty
kilometers (six to nineteen miles). As a result, the last commercial line was abandoned in
1880.
By 1904 there were over three million phones in the US, still connected by manual
switchboard exchanges. By 1914, the U.S. was the world leader in teledensity and had
more than twice the teledensity of Sweden, New Zealand, Switzerland, and Norway. The
relatively good performance of the U.S. occurred despite competing telephone networks
not interconnecting.
For the next half-century, the network behind the telephone grew progressively larger and
much more efficient, and after the rotary dial was added the instrument itself changed
little until touch-tone signaling started replacing the rotary dial in the 1960s.

IDEA
IDEA was incorporated as Birla Communications Limited on March 14, 1995 and
granted a certificate of commencement of business on August 11, 1995. Its registered
office was in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The name was changed to Birla AT&T
Communications Limited on May 30, 1996 following the execution of a joint venture
agreement dated December 5, 1995 between AT&T Corporation and Grasim Industries
Limited pursuant to which the Aditya Birla Group held 51% of our Equity Share capital
and AWS Group held 49% of our Equity Share capital. Registered office was transferred
from Industry House, 1st Floor, 159 Church Gate Reclamation, Mumbai 400 020,
Maharashtra to Suman Tower, Plot No. 18, Sector 11, Gandhinagar 382011 Gujarat on
October 22, 1996. With effect from January 1, 2001 following our merger with Tata
Cellular Limited the joint venture agreement between AT&T Corporation and Grasim
Industries
Limited dated December 5, 1995 was replaced by a shareholders agreement dated
December 15, 2000 entered into between Grasim Industries Limited on behalf of the
Aditya Birla Group, Tata Industries Limited on behalf of the Tata Group and AT&T
Wireless Services Inc. on behalf of the AWS Group following which their name was
changed to Birla Tata AT&T Limited on November 6, 2001.
Consequent to the introduction of the Idea brand, its name was changed to Idea Cellular
Limited on May 1, 2002. The AWS Group exited from the Company on September 28,
2005 by selling 371,780,740 Equity Shares of the Company, which constituted 50% of
the holding of AT&T Cellular Private Limited in equity share capital, to ABNL and by
transferring the remaining 371,780,750 Equity Shares to Tata Industries Limited.
The Tata Group ceased to be a shareholder of the Company on June 20, 2006 when Tata
Industries Limited and Apex Investments (Mauritius) Holding Private Limited (formerly
known as AT&T Cellular Private Limited) sold all their shares in the Company to the
Aditya Birla Group.

to 10% of the total Equity Shares which are held by it. By its letters dated December 2,
2006 to ABNL and Birla TMT, P5 Asia has given its written consent for the Issue and has
confirmed that it does not intend to offer for sale any of the Equity Shares held by it in

Idea, either directly or through Subsidiaries, provide mobile services in the Andhra
Pradesh, Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Kerala, Madhiya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Uttar
Pradesh (West) Circles, and have recently launched services and as such are in the
process of fully rolling-out network in the Uttar Pradesh (East), Rajasthan and Himachal
Pradesh Circles pursuant to licenses issued by the DoT.
The company will have a subscription base of 394 million and a customer market share of
35% and 41% respectively. As the merger is expected to take 24 months to complete,
both companies have agreed to operate as separate companies until then. Together,
Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of Aditya Birla Group said, “Idea and Vodafone will
build a very important company when we look at our mutual power.” The merger of
fierce competitors in the Indian telecommunications industry came after India’s largest
company Reliance Industries Limited, owned by Mukesh Ambani, launched Reliance Jio
Infocomm Limited (Jio) in September 2016. Jio came up with prices, offering free voice
and the lowest prices in the world. It has disrupted the telecommunications industry in the
country where telecom operators receive 70% of their revenue through voice telephony.
To deal with Jio’s attacks, the operators went into the integration mode, discovering the
spectrum, minors, infrastructure, etc. With Jio growing exponentially during the day with
offers such as free mobile authorities, and another competition in Airtel at mergers and
acquisitions, Idea-Vodafone faces a tough road ahead. It remains to be seen whether the
largest merger in India’s mobile history will be the game changer in the world’s second
largest telecommunications market.
Challenges:
However, the markets did not respond well to the merger. After the announcement, Idea’s
price range began to decline. The share price dropped from Rs.97.70 on March 20, 2017
to Rs.81.80 on September 06, 2017. Analysts were of the opinion that this would be
similar to a three-legged race with Usain Bolt. In other words, the feeling of competing
with two leading brands (Airtel and Jio) for two different brands could be a daunting task.
The integration of Idea-Vodafone will be the grand launch of the telecom sector post
Reliance JIO in September 2016. The promoters of Idea and Vodafone Group will be
joint ventures of the integrated business and will have equal assurance rights for both
promoters on key issues. Together, Vodafone will be allocated 364.50 crores shares
Aditya Birla Group is also entitled to receive up to 9.5% of additional shares in Vodafone
Group within three years after the closing of the contract at the agreed price of INR 130
per share. But these Aditya Group rights will be the work based on the growth achieved
and the market value of the combined business.

Our ongoing programmes:
Smart Agri
Agriculture is becoming more and more knowledge intensive. Millions of food-insecure
smallholder farmers in India could improve their yields, incomes and resilience if they
had access to the appropriate information and knowledge to make informed choices about
their farms.
The project aims to deliver a comprehensive solution on smart agriculture using tech-
based approach to improve agriculture practices, farm yield, revenues and overall quality
of life for farmers. It also aims to enhance livelihoods of around 50,000 small farmers
(cotton, soya) through sustainable farming approaches and improve agriculture practices
by adopting IOT based solutions through Sensors, Multilingual Application, QueryBot,
Crop Disease Detection, Artificial Intelligence for data analysis. Regular training and
handhold support are being provided to the farmers for adoption of tech based farming
methods to increase the productivity. It also build entrepreneurs in the form of lead
farmers who support a cluster of farmers through tech-enabled 100 demonstrations farm
land. The initiative is for two years and is under implementation in Madhya Pradesh and
Maharashtra.
Jigyasa
Flagship programme in the domain of Education – Jigyasa – aims to be build knowledge
for life and addresses some of the most pressing concerns faced by education sector in
India. It is widely known that most teachers follow traditional method of teaching which
makes classrooms uninteresting and causes drop outs amongst students. Often
infrastructure provided by the government is also not adequately used enough. Our
intervention aims to build capacity of teachers, introduce digital content to make learning
and teaching more enjoyable, and augment existing infrastructure as needed. They have
also developed India’s largest multi-lingual scholarship discovery and assistance platform
– www.learningwithvodafoneidea.in which curates information of scholarships worth
more than Rs. 15,000 crore rupees. Almost 30,000 students have received scholarship –
several of them for the first time – through support provided by our scholarship portal.
Vodafone Idea CSR’s flagship programme on financial literacy – Jaadu Ginni Ka – aims
to fill that gap. Jaadu Ginni Ka content is based on simple story-telling format and
features many games, activities and quizzes and is available as a free download for
Android in ten Indian languages.
As part of our plan to deepen engagement with end-beneficiaries, we have also launched
customised mobile vans that are taking Jaadu Ginni Ka to communities in seven states.
We have positively impacted almost 1 crore people – almost half of them women – in 16
states since the programme started in 2018.
Digital Village
Our rural India faces number of issues in absence of livelihood opportunities, basic
infrastructure, facilities at public institutions, awareness among people and Gram
Panchayat functionaries etc. These issues become grave if the places are affected by the
left wing extremism. To address these issues a comprehensive program was designed
with two components one with an aim to create model village and another to provide
support to rural women in setting up food supply chain system and enhance their
livelihood through technology integration.
·
using mobile based application. RSV is an Android based Point of Sales (POS) mobile
application that makes it easy for rural women (RUDIbens) -. The initiative has also
developed an enterprise resource platform (ERP) that provides control over all business
processes and business process owners while providing ease of access through mobile
applications and user-friendly graphic user interface (GUI). It was initiated in the State of
Gujarat State and expanded to Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan in the year
2019-20. 4700 SHG women have been trained on the use of RSV mobile application to
sell agro food products. The project has benefitted 1.4 lakh households who are getting
affordable and hygienic agro food products at their door step.
NGOs, CBOs etc. increase impact of their work, we have a special initiative called
Connecting for Good where we provide them with requisite technology support through
grants.
We have also developed India’s first crowdsourcing platform – www.socialapphub.com -
that curates mobile solutions with social impact. The Hub currently features over 700
apps and offers a plethora of knowledge: articles, latest news trends, interviews and case
studies on how mobile technology has created impact at the grass-root level.

envision to provide them education-related expenses such as books, reference material
etc.
