Activity 5

In 1989, the biggest employers amongst tourism-related sectors were restaurants and hotels, with 1100
people being employed. This number continued rising and reached a peak of 1600 in 2004. However,
there was a slight drop by 1570 employees in 2009.

Despite some fluctuations, the numbers of employees in sports and leisure remained relatively constant
from 1994 to 2004, at about 800 jobs being offered. Nevertheless, there were signs of decline as this
figures dropped from 800 to 700 jobs towards the end of the period.

Finally, another fact worth noting is that travel and tourism sectors employed the fewest people. From
1989 to 1994, the number of people working in travel and tourism were the same as that of people
working in sports and leisure, at approximately 800 jobs. However, from 1994 onwards, there was a
noticeable decrease in travel and tourism jobs, with only 600 and 400 jobs in 2004 and 2009 respectively.

Homework exercise 2

The bar chart above depicts how many films were rented and sold from a particular store annually
between 2002 and 2011.

In general, it can be observed that DVD had the highest percentage over the whole period, with rentals and
VHS sales second and third respectively. However, the DVD sales witnessed a slight dip from 2007
onwards.

In 2002, renting was the highest among all four formats, with 180,500 renters. Nonetheless, the number
started to decrease dramatically and fell to a low of 50,500 in 2011. By the same token, the second highest
format in 2002 was the VHS sales and it also had its peaks and troughs.

Furthermore, DVD experienced a considerable increase in its sales over the years. Despite some
fluctuations, the numbers of DVD sales went up significantly and reached its peak of 210,500 in the year
2007. From 2007 onwards, it started to decrease consistently but was still the most preferred in 2011. On
the other hand, the Blu-ray had the lowest percentage over the whole period, but in general, it increased
slightly between 2007 and 2011.
