Platini or Ronaldo
These two exceptional players
lay claim to being the king of
the European
Championships. Both are
tied on nine goals as the
all-time top scorer, and
while Ronaldo may just
break the tie in this Euro
campaign, Platini fans can
make a good case as the
1984 winner is an untouchable
icon. After all, he scored all nine
goals in one single competition.

ENGLAND start their Euro 2020 campaign
today with a revenge mission against Croatia,
who beat Gareth Southgate’s men in the
World Cup semi-finals in Russia three years
ago. But there’s a hurdle in the Three Lions’
way. In nine attempts, they have never won
an opening match at the tournament – not
even at Wembley in 1996. That’s an indicator
of why England have never won the European
Championship. >34

Pitch im-perfect
It was a painful start for Spain in their Euro 2020 campaign as poor finishing saw
them end up with a 0-0 draw against Sweden. Coach Luis Enrique, while rueing the

pitch didn’t help us, I saw players of the highest quality struggling to move the ball
around and in the dressing room the players were complaining about it too,’ he says.
