Identification of Potential Business Opportunities

Exercise 1.1 – THE S.W.O.T. Analysis

Choose the top two (2) businesses in your area. Give the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities
and threats of each. You can provide as many answers as you can. Write your answers in
bulleted form.

Business #1: Angelica’s Grocery Store

“Angelica’s Grocery Store” is one of the top businesses in our community. It is a

local grocery store in my area, despite being a small store they possess quite several
regular customers. The business started way back in 2010. It displays promising growth
throughout the years to the present times.

Strengths:

 Location

- Their store is stationed on a busy road which a lot of potential shoppers can be
attracted to buy their goods.

 Low Price Products

- They are known for their products that cost less compared to its competitors.

 No Rent Expense

- Their store is established on the 1st floor of their house which they already owned,
therefore, they don’t rent for space

 Essential Products

- Most of their products that are being sold are necessities which every household need
for their daily lives, so the demand is not easily swayed.

Weaknesses:
 Limited Workforce

- Their workforce only consists of 4 workers which is quite limited for their business.

 Limited Space

- Their store is only a small space for their grocery which restricts them to display more
products and to contain more customers.

 Limited Storage

- With the location of their grocery within their residence, they have limited storage that
limits them from holding more stocks of their goods.

Opportunities:

 Few Competitors

- Within our community, only a small number of groceries are established. So only a few
competitors are faced by their business.

 High Demand In Essentials

- With the pandemic occurring, lots of people became financially unstable and they are
limited to buying only essentials for their daily lives. In this situation, essentials became a
high demand for every household.

Threats:

 Emerging Competition
- Convenient stores and new groceries are emerging within our community with much
more advanced and better facilities.
 New Safety Regulations
- With the COVID-19 pandemic still going on, many guidelines were given to businesses,
like wearing face masks, social distancing, and curfew hours which restrict them from
having longer business hours to operate.

Business #2: Ate’s Fruits & Vegetables Stand

Ate’s Fruits & Vegetables Stand is a new business that was built in our community. Despite
being a new business they still attract many customers. They sell a wide variety of fruits and
veggies.

Strengths:

 Location

- Their location is beside the main road, which the majority of people walk and pass by.

 Daily Operation
- From Monday to Sunday, they are open and ready to sell fruits and vegetables.

 Essential Products

- Fruits and Vegetables are considered as necessities of the household for their every
day lives.
Weaknesses:
 Limited Workforce
- Their workforce only consists of 3 workers which is quite lacking for their business.
 High-Priced Products
- Their products are quite costly compared to other markets.
 Perishable goods
- Most of Fruits and vegetables have a short span of life, they tend to rot.
Opportunities:

 High Demand In Essentials

- With the pandemic occurring, lots of people became financially unstable and they are
limited to buying only essentials for their daily lives. In this situation, essentials became a
high demand for every household.

 Growing Population
- The population within our community is growing, and this will lead to higher
consumption of products and lower wages for workers.

Threats:
 Markets
- Vendors within the market that sell the same goods, fruits and vegetables with lower
prices, and better services.

 Rising Costs of products

- The prices of fruits and vegetables are becoming much higher thus, requires more
capital or cost expense.

 New Safety Regulations

- With the COVID-19 pandemic still going on, many guidelines were given to businesses,
like wearing face masks, social distancing, and curfew hours which restrict them from
having longer business hours to operate.

Exercise 1.2 – PRODUCT INNOVATION

From your SWOT analysis, what product can you innovate, develop and maintain now in your
community? Develop an original product/service for your community. Write the processes to
develop/create such product/service. Cite specific references that guided you in the process of
innovation.

Phase 1: Market Environment Analysis

According to the SWOT Analysis that I conducted in our community, the customers tend to
buy more of the daily necessities or foods that can satisfy their hunger and cravings at the same
time. Many of the consumers in our community are avoiding going outside to minimize the
chance of being sick with the COVID-19 pandemic still occurring. Our neighborhood lacks food
businesses which can be an opportunity in establishing this kind of business.

Phase 2: Ideas

The ideas created should address the problems and needs of the customers. According to the
Market Environment Analysis done in our community, Essentials are in high demand, Population
is increasing, COVID-19 preventive measures and guidelines are implemented, and lack of food
businesses within our area. With the information provided, I have come up with developing Fruit
& Vegetable Beverages and Snacks.

Phase 3: Feedback

With the ideas generated I will connect with some of my friends, family or possible
customers to collect feedback with my ideas. Feedbacks are important in order to develop the
product further and improve its qualities or change it if needed to. With the feedbacks and
suggestions I collected I had more ideas created and formed. Many told me that I should also go
with fruits and vegetables that are in season and consider the current season we are in, which is
summer.

Phase 4: Final Product

From the idea generated which is “Fruits & Vegetables Beverages and Snacks” and the
feedbacks and suggestions given by my friends, families and some possible customers I have
come up of developing Fruit & Vegetable Beverages and Snacks specifically consist of: Mango
Tapioca Drink, BerryCado (Strawberry and Avocado) Smoothie for the beverages and Buko
De Leche Hopia and Yema Kalabasa for the delicacies and snack. I will be also offering FREE
delivery within our community for the convenience and safety of my customers. With this
product I can satisfy their cravings and maybe their hunger as well while keeping them healthy
my nutritious products.

Exercise 1.3 - INTERVIEW

After you have chosen a particular product/service, choose a method you prefer to collect a data
– through interview. You will do this in order to determine the viability of your product/s or
service/s. Formulate five (5) important interview questions. Collect ten (10) answers from ten
(10) different persons. Interview may be conducted through fb messenger/chat, text or call.
(This is in compliance to IATF Protocols).

Interview Questions:
1. Is the price of the product reasonable?
2. Does this product address customer needs and wants?
3. Does the FREE delivery make you consider buying?
4. Is my product timely?
5. Would you recommend my product?
Exercise 1.4 – CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
From your interview, is your product feasible? Please answer in a comprehensive manner. Write
yes or no on its feasibility then give the result of your interview.

Based on the interview that I conducted, all of the respondents found the price of the

products reasonable, while only nine (9) of the respondents consider that my product addresses

the consumers’ needs and wants. Every respondent believes that the additional service or Free

Delivery of the product persuades them to buy the products, where only 90% of the respondents

thought that my products are well-timed and ten (10) out of ten (10) of the respondents said that

they will recommend the products; therefore I conclude that my product is feasible. The interview

also shows that my products need to improve on being able to address the needs and wants of the

consumers, and refining the products’ timeliness. These problems can be solved by improving the

quality of the products in terms of Freshness, Taste, Quality Ingredients, and Nutritional Value.
