Experiment……

Aim of the Experiment: To determine the value of Acceleration due to gravity ‘g' using simple
pendulum.

Apparatus Required:

Simple pendulum ( bob+string)

Spherical bob

Stop watch and metre scale.

Theory :

Simple pendulum is an instrument which is used to find out the time period and Acceleration due to
gravity

The time period of oscillation is directly proportional to the square root of its effective length and
inversely proportional to the square root of Acceleration due to gravity. From these two factors the
time period of oscillation of a simple pendulum is given by the following relation:

T = 2Pi square root of l/g

T^2= 4pi^2 l/g

So g=4pi^2 l/T^2

Observation table 1:

To determine the diameter of the bob using Vernier calipers .

S.NO M.S.R VSR×LC Diameter

Mean corrected diameter( D) = ……cm

Radius = D/2 = ……cm =…….m

Observation table 2:

To determine the time period of the pendulum using a stop watch

( This Observation table will be given separately).

a)Here effective length of the pendulum = Distance between point of suspension to the surface of
the bob + radius of the bob ( from Observation table 1)=…..cm

b)Time for 10 complete oscillation =

(i) …t1…sec ( ii)…t2….sec
Mean time period =t1+t2/2
t = …….sec

c) Time period T= t/10 sec

d) T^2 =……

e) l/ T^2 =…….cm/s^2

f) g= 4 pi^2 l/ T^2 cm s^-2….(1)

Calculations : Put all the values of l/ T^2 ,pi value in equation 1.

Therefore g= ……..cm s^-2

=……….ms^-2

Result: The value of Acceleration due to gravity g = ……..ms^-2

Precautions:

1) The oscillation should be of small amplitude.

2) The bob should be displaced gently so that it may oscillate in a straight line.It should not
make any conical or spin motion.
3) The iron stand with long rod and heavy base should be used.
4) The effective length should be taken accurately.
