THE NEW GROOVE OF A GLORIOUS BAND CALLED ‘OSIBISA’

More than an Afrobeat orchestra, the music from ‘Osibisa’ sounds like a sonic adventure through
the roots of African rhythms, keeping the funk elements on hold for a deeper tribal experience, with
Afro-Latin percussion playing a big part in their psychedelic explorations.
Funky from the start to end, the single “Douala” is a party starter.

The dramatic shifts in tempo, intricate breaks, and challenging segues from one rhythm to another
that are woven into the complex arrangements place exceptional demands on their individual and
collective talents.
There’s no four-to-the-floor backbeat here but a set of complex polyrhythms.
Much of this rhythmic dynamism is a product of the development of syncretic idioms drawing from
African as well as European roots.

Each instrument is rendered in stunning detail.

They have created something rich and powerful considering that, this is not only their first new
release in 20 years, but their first single for a major since they formed the band!
There is a strong sense of happiness, sincerity and warmth that becomes immediately relatable.

The video of ‘Douala’ is a vibrant celebration of joy and life in his simplicity and it is finally
available on their youtube channel ( https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCY3ClimPR9yIqB-

What began as an experiment has withstood the test of time, changing music trends, and shifting
attitudes about Latin, African, Caribbean, Jazz, Funk, Rock, and R&B.
They manage to create a confident, polished, and cohesive sound evident in only a few well
establish ensembles and seem to relish the opportunity to tackle these traditional rhythms from a
fresh perspective, allowing their individual virtuosity to flourish as perhaps never before.

Warm, uplifting and fizzing with both passion and virtuosity, ‘Douala’ is not only a testament from
Osibisa, but a glorious affirmation of music at its most potent and universal.
