Q.1 Figure besides shows the scale and reading of a thermometer.
Answer following for this instrument:
(a) Range (b) Resolution (c) Type of instrument.
(d) If actual temperature of the measurand is 10oC, what is
relative error in measurement? (e) If there is a constant drift
of +2oC along the scale, what should be the true measurement
according to the reading after the drift compensation?
Ans. (a) -10oC to 50oC (b) 2oC (c) Deflection type, analog type, indicating type (d) -20% (e) 6oC
Q.2 A set of independent voltage measurements are recorded as 5.02, 5.10, 5.05 and
5.07 V. Calculate (a) the average voltage and (b) the range of error.
Ans. a) 5.06 V. b) ±0.04 V.
Q.3 A frequency measurement device has range of 0-200Hz. If a measurement gives
reading of 102Hz, find out the true frequency if the device has relative error of:
(a) 2.5% [99.5Hz] (b) 2.5% on FSD [97Hz]
Q.4 The dead zone in a pyrometer is 0.1% of span. The calibration is 500°C to
1000°C. Determine (a) Range (500°C to 1000°C) (b) span (500°C) (c) minimum
change that can be detected by the instrument. (0.5°C)
Q.5 An ammeter reads 5.7A but the true value of current is 5.57 A. determine the
error and the correction for this instrument.
Ans. a) 0.13 A b) -0.13 A.
Q.6 A clinical thermometer can read from 94oF to 106oF and has total 24 divisions on
its linear scale. Determine its range, span and resolution.
Ans. 94oF to 106oF, 12oF, 0.5oF, respectively.
Q 7. A 0-100 volt voltmeter has accuracy of 2 percent for full scale reading. If the
measured voltage is 50 V. Calculate the relative error and the error range at given
voltage.
Ans. a) 4% b) ±4 V.
Q.8 A potentiometer displacement measuring instrument use 50cm long resistance
with total resistance value of 1kΩ with a nonlinearity of 0.5% FSD. If 50V dc
supply is used in the potentiometer, calculate its sensitivity. What could be
maximum absolute measurement error?
Ans. Sensitivity K=1V/cm, maximum absolute measurement error = 0.25cm
Q.9 For the given circuit, an ideal voltmeter V reads 30V. If
the voltmeter V has internal resistance of 500Ω, what will R1=33.3Ω R4=20Ω
be the actual reading and absolute measurement error?
R3=100Ω

Ans. Vactual=28.8V, Error=-1.15

Q.10 In the above circuit, if current in the resistance R5 (30Ω) R2=33.3Ω
is to be measured with an ammeter having internal
resistance of 5Ω, what will be the absolute and relative
measurement error.
Ans. -0.052A and -5.2% respectively.
Q.11 A thermometer has a time constant of 5s. It is quickly taken from an ice-box to a
boiling water pot. What temperature will be indicated after 3s duration.

Q 12. A 1K variable resistance has linearity of 1% and the movement of contact arm
is 300°. If the instrument is to be used as a potentiometer with linear scale of 0 –
5V. Calculate the following a) maximum position deviation b) maximum
resistance deviation c) and maximum voltage error.
Ans. a) 3°. b) 10 c) 50mV.
Q 13. The expected measured voltage across an unknown resistance using ideal
voltmeter is 90V. However due to loading effect, the instrument used has
accuracy of 97.5%. Calculate a) true reading of the instrument and b) error due to
loading effect of instrument.
Ans. a) 87.75V b) -2.25V
Q 14. A voltmeter with sensitivity of 1000/V is used to measure the voltage at its 50V
scale, across a circuit having output resistance of 20K. If the open circuit
voltage of given circuit is 14V then calculate the (a) voltmeter reading (10V) (b)
percentage error (-28.57%).
Q 15. A Voltmeter with internal resistance of 200K reads 100V across an unknown
resistance in series with an ammeter. Calculate following if the ammeter reads
10mA having internal resistance of 0. a) Apparent resistance b) Actual
resistance c) percentage error in the measurement.

Q 16. It is desired to measure the value of current in
the resistance ‘R’ in the adjacent figure by
connecting a 50 ammeter. Calculate the a)
Actual current value b) measured current value
c) percentage error and d) accuracy.

Q 17. For the adjacent figure calculate the relative
measurement error due to the loading effects of
the instruments, for the voltage measurement
across terminals ‘a’ and ‘b’, with following
cases of voltmeter ‘V’ and ammeter ‘A’. a) If
V is ideal and A is practical. b) If V is practical
but A is ideal. c) If both are practical.
Ans. a) 9.1% b) -0.5% c) 8.51%
