Today I am going to be demonstrating on how to Administer Oral Medication.

Oral medication is the most common, least expensive and most convenient route for medications.

Now there are different types of administering oral medications.

Sublingual

Buccal

And the nasogastric Tube Administration.

And in this demonstration, we are going to e using the Sublingual medication.

To start the demonstration perform hand hygiene and observe the appropriate infection control
procedures.

Then I am going to be checking my patients Medication Order.

--- So, my patient is

--- date of birth, February 11, 1974.

--- She has no known allergies.

Then I am going to check what medications I have to administer today.

--- So, has a medication order and a PRN protocol for Tylenol, 650 mg by mouth every four hours as
needed for pain or fever.

Then, I am going to get my medication cart and gather my supplies and medications.

--- While I am at it, I am going to compare the label of the medication container against the written
order to double check. Also, get the correct amount of medication for the required dose which is 650mg
of Tylenol, without contaminating it and check the expiration date of the medication.

Now, the medication needed is in capsule form. So, what I am going to do is to place the packaged unit-
dose directly into a medicine cup while not removing it from the package to avoid contamination. You
are going to only open it when you are about to give the medication.

Also, if your patient has difficulty swallowing capsules, crush the capsule into fine powder so that the
patient won’t have trouble swallowing it,

Now, I am ready to go back to my patient.

First provide privacy for your patient by closing the door or closing the curtains.

Then we are going to proceed and check the client’s identification band to make sure that we have the
right patient.
Now that we have the right patient, introduce yourself and then explain the purpose of the medication
and how it will help to your patient.

“Hello Ma’am, I am Alex, your attending nurse for today. And I am here to give you your medications for
today.

Now written here in the medication record from your doctor is that you have been having headaches
and you have a medication order for Tylenol of 650mg by mouth every four hours as needed for your
headaches or fever.

And since all your medications are going to be given orally, is it okay for you to sit up? Because I don’t
want you to choke.”

Then I am going to check the medication log again and see that Mam has not received any Tylenol within
the past 4 hours. And medication is to be administered through buccal administration.

After doble checking, remove the tablet from the packaging and give the patient sufficient water to
swallow the medication.

Now instruct the patient to place the medication in the mouth against the cheek until it dissolves
completely.

After making sure that the medication is been administered completely.

Record the medication given, dosage, time, any complaints or assessments of the client and your
signature.

Now that we are done, dispose all of the soiled supplies appropriately, wash your hands and then take
your leave.
