PAINTING
• the expression of ideas and emotions, with the
creation of certain aesthetic qualities, in two-
dimensional visual language.
• is the art of applying pigments to a surface in order
to present a picture of the subject.

Oil
• Oil painting is done
with the use of
ground pigments
mixed with linseed
oil and turpentine or
thinner.

Fresco
• Fresco painting is done with the
use of earth pigments mixed with
water and applied to fresh plaster
or glue which attaches the color to
the surface like a wall.
• When the plaster is wet, the
painting is described as buon
fresco or true fresco. On the other
hand, when the plaster is dry, the
painting is described as fresco
secco or dry fresco

• Water color painting is done
with the use of pigments
mixed with water and
applied to fine white paper,
cambric, parchment, ivory,
and silk can be used as
surface or ground.

• Tempera painting is
done with the use of
ground pigments mixed
with an albuminous or
colloidal vehicle (egg
yolk, gum, glue, or
casein).

colors closely resembling
dry pigments bound to
form crayons, which are
directly applied to the
surface, oftentimes paper.

being thinned with

Animals and Plants
During the ancient times,
man's primary concern was survival. In
the early stages of men's development
(hunting and food-gathering), his first
encounters were with animals and
plants. Because of this constant contact
with and their interest in these living
organisms, it was inevitable for them to
paint these things they needed to
survive. In fact, the earliest paintings
discovered in several caves in Europe
were those of animals. Even now, a
number of painters prefer animals and
plants, specifically flowering plants, as
subjects for their paintings.

Juan Luna
Filipino painter, sculptor and

Amorsolo was a portraitist and

Filipino abstract artist and a National
Artist of the Philippines awardee.
Joya was a printmaker, painter, mixed
media artist, and a former dean of
the University of the Philippines'

Pacita Abad (1946-2004)
Her earliest paintings were mostly
Figurative and social or political, covering
subjects like hunger. Her work then
expanded to include naturalist subject
matter, inspired by the places she saw on
her travels to exotic locations. This colorful
work of vibrant patterns segued into her
most well-known practice as an Abstract
painter.

Ang Kiukok (1935-2005)
a Filipino painter known for his
expressive, Cubist-like works. Kiukok
was awarded the title of National
Artist by his home country in 2001,
and continued to exhibit with success
until his death on May 9, 2005 in
Quezon City, the Philippines.

Benedicto Reyes Cabrera, better
known as "BenCab", is a Filipino
painter and was awarded National
Artist of the Philippines for Visual
Arts in 2006. He has been noted as
"arguably the best-selling painter of
his generation of Filipino artists.

Vincent Willem van Gogh
(1853 – 1890)
a Dutch post-impressionist painter who
posthumously became one of the most
famous and influential figures in the
history of Western art. In a decade, he
created about 2,100 artworks, including
around 860 oil paintings, most of which
date from the last two years of his life.
