Importance of the Material in Engineering Field

The knowledge of materials characteristics allows the designer not only to make the best
material selection as a function of its application in a given product, but also to overcome its
limits and constraints in a design path where materials and transformation technologies become
variables of the creation process. It is important to know about the material and its properties.
Polymers are materials with superior structure–property correlations. They have exceptional
mechanical properties such as strength, stiffness, creep, and dimensional stability, which are
further complemented by superior thermal stability, flame retardancy, and the like.
Polymers have broadly penetrated the materials markets at the commodity, engineering, and
high-technology specialty levels. Examples include automobile and airframe components, fibers
and fabrics, rubber products of all kinds, and packaging and structural plastics.
Understanding the importance of material in engineering field is important.
For example, when choosing a wire we can use gold wire but copper wire can achieve greater
mechanical stability. Standard bond strength tests, such as the wire pull test and the ball shear
test, have demonstrated that copper wire bonds are 25%–30% stronger than comparable gold
wire bonds.
Or when choosing a material for a brake. If the brakes are made up of plastic, it will only
be able to stop the car 1 or 2 times. But if you replace it with metal. The brake’s performance and
durability improves significantly. Now, if we compare both operation wise plastic brake is
inferior compared to a metal brake.
The efficacy and effectiveness of a material in field service depends on its properties. This
is where knowledge of materials science is important.
