OF
BARANGAY
SAN ROQUE
INTRODUCTION

Legendarily, Barangay San Roque was formerly called Magong-ong an adjacent Sitio of Barangay
Togbongon later in 1968, the residents in Sitio Magong-ong submitted a petition to the Municipal
Council asking for the separation of the Sitio from Barangay Togbongon and thereby making it as a
separate barangay. After the petition was approved, the name of Magong-ong was changed into San
Roque from its Patron Saint Señor San Roque.
The legal basis of creation of Barangay San Roque states in R.A 3590 as adopted by P.D 557 that
the date of ratification/plebiscite was October year 1970, so since 1970 until present the residents of
Barangay San Roque celebrates the “ARAW NG BARANGAY SAN ROQUE” every October 14.
Barangay San Roque is a plain and mountainous barangay that is located 4.500 km away from
the city and surrounded by the following barangays; North (Barangay Togbongon), South (Barangay
Poctoy), East (Barangay Luna) and West (Barangay Danao). The climate in Barangay San Roque is similar
to that of the city and to nearby towns and province. It falls under the first type of tropical climate that
is characterized by two seasons during the remaining months of the year.
The first structure established in Barangay San Roque is San Roque Chapel, Barangay Gym and
Barangay Health Center. And also, states there the chronological order of elected Punong barangays
from Hon. Pedro Zerda (1970-1979), Hon. Sevilla Borja (1979-1982), former OIC Fortunato Libres (1982-
1985), Hon. Romeo Garcia (1985-1988), Hon. Teofilo Libres (1988-2007), Hon. Rogelio Laid (2007-2018)
and the present Hon. Jessie Laid (2018-PRESENT).
The principal dialect in this barangay is Surigaonon, however some minorities speak Cebuano
and other dialects. The Religion is predominantly Roman Catholic interspersed with small groups
percentage of other sects. The telecommunications are available through cellphone, telephone and
radio handsets. In their electric supply is 100% availed provided by the Surigao Norte Electric
Cooperative (SURNECO), and also 75% of the residents obtains water from Surigao Water District and
the rest from shared faucet, community water system. The available transport vehicles are PUB, PUJ,
and tricycles going back and forth in this barangay.
