Module 3: Care of Clients in the Perioperative Nursing Practice

Module Content Summary:


This module introduces basic concepts, ethico-moral and legal principles related to perioperative nursing
care and provides students to apply the nursing process and critical thinking to specific perioperative
situations. The different roles and responsibilities of the nurse will be explored as well as prepare students
for entry into the perioperative nursing practice.Surgical nursing concepts are presented using a
combination of synchronous and asynchronous.Module 3 is divided into three parts:
Module 3.1 Preoperative Nursing Management (10 hours)
Module 3.2 Intraoperative Nursing Management (9 hours)
Module 3.3 Post-operative Nursing Management (9 hours)

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this module, the Level 3 students will be able to:
1. Define related terminologies
2. Compare the suffixes used to describe surgical procedure
3. Determine the indications and classifications of surgery according to purpose, degree of risk and
urgency.
4. Define the three phases of the surgical experience
5. Describe the scope of perioperative nursing practice
6. Determine the different preparations for surgery
7. Relate the laws, legal, ethico-moral and surgical principles all throughout the perioperative
phases.
8. Design a plan of care utilizing the nursing process in the care of a surgical client in the
perioperative phase.

Perioperative Nursing -it is used to describe the total surgical experience of the patient in the
preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative phases.

the infection-fighting processes turn on the body, they cause
organs to function poorly and abnormally.

7. Antiseptics  is an antimicrobial substance or compound that is applied to
living tissue/skin to reduce the possibility of infection, sepsis, or
