APL104: Tutorial set 5

1. Find the relationship between the bulk modulus (K), Young modulus (E) and Poisson’s ratio ()
for isotropic material
2. Find the relationship between the Shear modulus (G), Young modulus (E) and Poisson’s ratio ()
for isotropic material.
3. Determine the stress-strain relationship for
(a) plane-stress problem
(b) plane-strain problem.
4. A cubic (a  a  a) rubber block is inserted inside a rigid rectangular (a  a) cavity and is
compressed by hard steel block with a pressure p. Determine the components of normal stresses
and the maximum shear stress in the rubber block.
5. A rectangular (300 mm  150 mm) aluminum (E = 70 GPa,  = 0.3) plate of thickness 0.8 mm
is subjected to normal stresses (xx and yy). Find xx if the length along X-direction remains
unchanged (300 mm) for yy = 120 MPa. Find the deformed length and normal strains along the
diagonals.
