Types of Communities
Types of Communities
The context of people’s lives determines their health, and so blaming individuals for having poor
health or crediting them for good health is inappropriate. Individuals are unlikely to be able to
directly control many of the determinants of health. These determinants—or things that make
people healthy or not—include the above factors, and many others:
Income and social status - higher income and social status are linked to better health.
The greater the gap between the richest and poorest people, the greater the differences
in health.
Education – low education levels are linked with poor health, more stress and lower self-
confidence.
Physical environment – safe water and clean air, healthy workplaces, safe houses,
communities and roads all contribute to good health. Employment and working
conditions – people in employment are healthier, particularly those who have more
control over their working conditions
Social support networks – greater support from families, friends and communities is
linked to better health. Culture - customs and traditions, and the beliefs of the family and
community all affect health.
Genetics - inheritance plays a part in determining lifespan, healthiness and the likelihood
of developing certain illnesses. Personal behaviour and coping skills – balanced eating,
keeping active, smoking, drinking, and how we deal with life’s stresses and challenges all
affect health.
Health services - access and use of services that prevent and treat disease influences
health
Gender - Men and women suffer from different types of diseases at different ages.

The primary focus of community health nursing is to promote health and prevent
disease for entire population groups. It is where the levels of prevention, especially the
primary prevention is given importance the most. Problems that could be prevented are
discussed with public health nurses so it would not escalate to further complications.
The primary role of community health nurses is to provide treatment to patients.
Furthermore, community health nurses educate community members on how to
maintain their health in order to reduce the occurrence of illnesses and fatalities. They
organize educational events, distribute flyers, provide health exams, give prescriptions,
and deliver vaccines. There are a lot of nurse roles in public health nursing.
Maternal and Child health care nurses - ensure moms are taking care of their newborn
the right way.
School nurses - take care and teach children healthy eating habits and lifestyle.
Public health nurses -working at state and municipal level which are very much relevant
to the pandemic that we are experiencing right now. They are good in epidemiology and
are usually the ones who answers to your queries when it comes to public health
information.
Occupational health nurses - are much more limited only to the employees of a certain
company, they make sure that their employees’ health is assessed quarterly.
Hospice nurses - care for patients until the end of life, reassuring them a peaceful way
passing
Nurses also may distribute health-related items like condoms and pregnancy tests.
Examples of some health issues that community health nurses try to control or eliminate
are:
