Chapter – 1 & 2 | The Cold War Era & The End of Bipolarity
Q. 1. Refer to the following picture and give answers to the questions that follow:
Q. (b) When was this wall built and why was it toppled?
• This wall was built in 1961 to separate East Berlin from West Berlin. It was
built to stop the migration of people from East Germany to West Germany.
But in the decade of 1980, political liberalisation began in Eastern Germany
due to the disintegration of Soviet Union.
• Boundary rules were loosened. This caused historic chain of events and
movements in Germany that led to the destruction of government.
• On 9th November, 1989, restrictions on travel to either side of the Berlin Wall
were lifted up and it was announced that free entry and exits are allowed.
Huge mass of people from Eastern and Western Berlin crossed the wall and
met each other. Afterwards, the wall was toppled.
(b) No, the UN cannot stop the US from doing whatever it wants. The influence of the US is
considerable. As the single largest contributor to the UN, the US has unmatched financial
power. With its veto power, the US can stop any moves that it finds annoying or damaging to
its interests or the interests of its friends and allies. The power of the US and its veto within
the organisation also ensure that it has a considerable degree of say in the choice of the
Secretary General of the UN. The US can and does use this power to 'split' the rest of the
world and to reduce opposition to its policies.
(c) The statements represent the hegemony of the US. American attack on Iraq in 1991 is its
example. When Iraq captured Kuwait, many measures were taken to make Iraq understand.
After the failure of all measures, the UN permitted use of force in order to free Kuwait from
Iraq invaders. Army of America and 34 countries attacked Iraq and got succeeded. This is
known as 'First Gulf War'.
