Tip Grip Training Sheet:
Cut The Pencil Grip cut in half. Throw away the triangular portion, and place the other half on the pencil, with the round side
facing towards the tip of the pencil. Position the grip 1 ½ inches from the tip of the pencil. Put a rubber band on the pencil,
under the grip, approximately 1 inch from the tip of the pencil. Leave a ¼ inch space between the grip, and the rubber band. It is
important that the fingers be placed ON the rubber band, not the grip. This encourages thumb flexion at the IP joint (last joint of
the thumb). A video of how to adapt the The Pencil Grip is available at www.TheHandwritingClinic.com - look for the TIP Grip
Protocol video.

Full credit is given to The Pencil Grip company for sale and name of this grip. When describing the therapeutic procedure of adapting The Pencil Grip to
encourage increased thumb flexion of the last joint of the thumb (thumb IP joint), The Handwriting Clinic/Jan McCleskey, MA, OTR uses the term “TIP grip
protocol” for “thumb interphalangeal grip protocol”. A person cannot buy a “TIP Grip” – they can only purchase The Pencil Grip and adapt to follow a
protocol developed by The Handwriting Clinic to promote thumb flexion.

You do not have to use the TIP grip but if you would like to find out how the TIP grip can facilitate a dynamic
grasp please look at the Pencil Warm-ups video in the Fine Motor Store, or view the featured freebie
“Developing a Fine Motor Program for Classrooms or Therapy. The TIP grip pattern uses The Pencil Grip cut
in ½, flipped upside down, and then the student holds under the grip. The TIP grip flexes the thumb, which
encourages a dynamic grasp. Full credit is given to The Pencil Grip company for The Pencil Grip. The TIP grip
just describes the grasp pattern that the student uses when flexing the Thumb InterPhalangeal joint.
Placement of ½ a foam pencil grip or rubber band underneath the grip shows the student where to hold with
a tripod grasp.
