The bar chart gives information on the means of transport used for work journeys in a specific European city at 20
year intervals from 1960 to 2000. At the first glance, it is the private transportation namely car that gained in
popularity while the number of bus users dropped significantly over the surveyed period.
In 1960, bus was the most widely used means of transport occupying nearly 40 percent of the total number of
commuters. The number of workers travelling by bus; however, declined substantially to just 15 percent in 2000. In
stark contrast, car, which was the least popular mode of travel in 1960 more than tripled its proportion of travellers,
rising from 8 percent to 23% in 1980. It is noticeable that this way of transportation became the most popularly used
in 2000 with 36%, nearly three times as much as the percentage of bus users.
Train and Tube showed certain variations in its passengers’ volume. While the former experienced a rise from about
16% to around 27% between 1960 and 1980 and then a fall of approximately 5% in 2000, the latter fluctuated slightly
at more or less 25%
