    The Peloponnesian War was a 27-year war between Athens and Sparta that lasted from 431 to 404 BCE. Athens had grown powerful through the Delian League, which provided resources that allowed Athens to build a strong navy and form an empire. However, Sparta grew angry and jealous of Athens' growing power. The war began in 431 BCE when Sparta attacked Athens after tensions escalated over conflicts involving Corfu. Though Athens had a stronger navy, Sparta had better land forces. After several major battles where Sparta gained the upper hand, Athens surrendered in 404 BCE, ending its Golden Age and bringing its dominance to a close.
