EXPLAIN WHY THE CHURCH OF CHRIST SUBSISTS IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH

Christ founded only one Church his Church — on Peter, with the guarantee of indefectibility. The
word subsists means to “exist as a substance,” and there is only one substance of the Church, i.e., the
Catholic Church. It does not mean exists as a subset, as if only a part of the Church exists in the Catholic
Church, meaning others part exists elsewhere. There is only one Church which we confess in the Creed
as “one, holy, catholic, and apostolic” and the magisterium teaches us that it subsists in the Catholic
Church, which is governed by the successor of Peter and by the bishops in communion with
him, although many elements of sanctification and of truth are found outside of its visible structure.
 Hence, while we confess that the Church of Christ subsists in the Catholic Church, we imply that
at least some Communities not in union with the Catholic Church are truly Churches that serve as
"means of salvation" to those who belong to them.

TRINITY ACCORDING TO ST THOMAS

“Therefore since in God understanding and loving himself the Word is the Son and the Word's originator
is the Father, the Holy Spirit (who is love in so far as God is in himself as what is loved) must proceed
from the Father and the Son.”

HYPOSTATIC UNION - The union of the human and divine natures in the one divine person of Christ, as
defined at the Council of Chalcedon in 451 AD.

WHAT IS REVELATION?
Disclosure by God of himself and his will to the human race. The disclosure comes to human beings by
way of communication, which implies the communicator, who is God; and the receiver, who is the
human being. There are in general two main forms of revelation, commonly called natural and
supernatural.

DIFFERENTIATE PARTICULAR AND GENERAL (LAST) JUDGEMENT. WHEN WILL IT HAPPEN?

Particular judgment, according to Christian eschatology, is the divine judgment that a departed person
undergoes immediately after death, in contradistinction to the general judgment (or Last Judgment) of
all people at the end of the world.

WHERE DID THE SON OF GOD COME FROM? The SON comes through the intellect and volition the
Father.

RELATIONSHIP OF THE FATHER AND THE SON TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

1. Father to Son > GENERATION / PROCESSION
2. Father and Son to Holy Spirit > SPIRATION
EXPLAIN THE COMMUNION OF SAINTS = word: SOLIDARITY

CHURCH AS CATHOLIC BECAUSE:

1. Christ is present in the Church.
2. The Church is called to proclaim the Word.

WHAT IS INDULGENCE? WHAT IS IT FOR? WHAT SINS ARE REMITTED?

INDULGENCE is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has
already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain
prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption,
dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and all of the
saints.

HOLY ORDER - The word "holy" simply means "set apart for some purpose." The word "order"
designates an established civil body or corporation with a hierarchy. Ordination means legal
incorporation into an order.

WHY IS THE CHURCH SACRAMENT OF SALVATION?

The Church is explicitly referred to as the “universal sacrament of salvation.”
The Church is “Communion of Saints”. This expression refers first to the “holy things” (sancta), above all
the Eucharist, by which the “unity of believers, who form one body in Christ, is both represented
and brought about.
The Church is the Sacrament of salvation because She is both a sign and instrument of God’s salvation
to humanity.
The Church is the Sacrament of Communion because She is God’s instrument to bring human beings
into communion with God and with each other through the grace of the sacraments.

FOUR MARKS OF THE CHURCH

1. One. The Church is one. It is a single, united and global Church which has its basis in Christ Jesus.
2. Holy. Because it is the Body of Christ with Jesus as the Head. This does not mean that all
members of the Church are free from sin. It means that her sacraments help her to make the
faithful holy.
3. Catholic. It literally means “universal.” The role of the Church is to spread the Word of God
universally across the world.
4. Apostolic. The origins and beliefs of the Church started out with the Apostles at Pentecost.
5.
THREE STATES OF THE CHURCH
1. Church Militant – the Church on Earth
2. Church Suffering – the souls in purgatory
3. Church Triumphant – the Church in heaven: these are saints known by the Church as well as
those saints known only to God.

SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION
One of the seven sacraments in which the faithful are absolved from sins committed
after baptism through confession to a priest, after which they are reconciled with the Christian
community. It has three elements: conversion, confession and celebration.
WHAT ARE THE ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF THE SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION?
The essential elements are two: the acts of the penitent who comes to repentance through the
action of the Holy Spirit, and the absolution of the priest who in the name of Christ grants
forgiveness and determines the ways of making satisfaction.
WHAT ARE THE ACTS OF THE PENITENT? - examination of conscience and contrition

SCRIPTURAL BASIS OF ASSUMPTION

In Munificentissimus Deus, Pope Pius XII pointed to the Book of Genesis (3:15) as scriptural
support for the dogma in terms of Mary's victory over sin and death through her intimate
association with "the new Adam" (Christ) as also reflected in 1 Corinthians 15:54: "then shall
come to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory."
THE LAST FOUR THINGS
In Christian eschatology, the Four Last Things or four last things of man (Latin: quattuor
novissima) are Death, Judgment, Heaven, and Hell, the four last stages of the soul in life and the
afterlife.

MEANING: “CHRIST DESCENDED INTO HELL”

The early church believed that after his death Christ descended into hell (realm of the dead or
abode of the dead) on Holy Saturday in order to rescue or save the souls of the righteous, such
as the Hebrew patriarchs, who died before his crucifixion.

THERE IS NO SALVATION OUTSIDE THE CHURCH

The Latin phrase extra Ecclesiam nulla salus means “outside the Church there is no salvation.”
(St Cyprian, 4th c.) It does not mean that everyone who is not visibly within the Church is necessarily
damned in case of inculpable ignorance. The Catechism of the Catholic Church explained this as
"all salvation comes from Christ the Head through the Church which is His Body.”

THEOTOKOS VS CHRISTOTOKOS
 Christotokos literally means Christ-bearer and the one who gives birth to Christ. It
acknowledges Christ only as a man.
 Theotokos literaly means God-bearer and the one who gives birth to Christ. It acknowledges
Christ as God and man.

HOMOOUSIOS VS HOMOIOUSIOS >>> ousios – substance / element

 Homoousios means "same substance".
 Homoiousios means "similar substance".
 The Council of Nicea in 325AD affirmed that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Godhead) are of
the homoousious (same substance).
