Text 1, is a transcript of the speech ‘Save America’, that was given by Donald Trump

in the Capitol before the Congress was to confirm the election’s results, and text 2 is
a clip from the movie ‘Coach Carter’, which shows his power and behaviour. The two
texts use similar yet contrasting linguistics and cinematic techniques to showcase
the establishing and undermining of power.

To begin with, the texts are similar in the manner that both the speakers Donald
trump and Coach Carter show themselves as the people in the position of power with
Donald trump as the president and Coach Carter as the person who would be
training the team.
Text 1 vividly describes how Donald Trump is the one that as the president he has
helped people in the past and will continue to do so. When he says, “ Many of the
Republicans, I helped them get in. I helped them get elected. I helped Mitch get
elected. I could name 24 of them, let’s say”. Using the anecdotes of mentioning that
he was the one to get such great people elected, he’s giving out the message that
he’s the one who has a lot of influential power in the parliament and within the
people to get people elected. Later when he mentions that he got 24 people elected,
he's giving logos to show that he has more than enough power to get more than one
person elected. Thus through the use of anecdotes and logos, Donald Trump is
presented as a person who has a lot of power and influence.
Similarly, text 2 shows Coach Carter showing his power within the crowd as the
team’s leader when he pushes the boy against the wall when he was disrespecting
him. After coach Carter’s introduction, Tim Cruz, a team member starts disrespecting
him and says “Can you believe this uppity negro sir”, while putting emphasis to the
word sir with a mocking tone. Coach tells him to walk out of the gym but as the boy
swings his hand to punch the coach he shows his dominance by pushing him against
the wall and "Teachers aren't allowed to touch students" Cruz whines to which
Coach Carter replies "I'm not a teacher, I'm your new basketball coach", and later
moves on with kicking him out of the team. Coach mentions how he can and will use
physical power which shows the extent of his power.During the argument a close up
shot of the boy and the coach is taken, mainly singularity the coach to show that he
has more power against the boy. Throughout the coach also keeps a stocic and
nonchalant expression whereas the boy has an expression of fear as he has realised
that his power has been undermined by the coach.  This shows that Coach Carter is
the one that has all the power here and that disrespecting rules will have severe
consequences.
Both the characters have shown their display of power by proving that they are the
more influential people and to be listened to and respected.

However, the texts differ in the way they show leadership.
Text 1, shows Donald Trump telling people that they will be the ones saving the
country. He gives them a feeling of pride with the fact that they are the builders of the
nation, when he states “you’re stronger, you’re smarter. You’ve got more going than
anybody, and they try to demean everybody having to do with us, and you’re the real
people. You’re the people that built this nation. You’re not the people that tore down
our nation”. The use of glittering generalities like, strong, smart and mentioning that
they are the real people, transfers the power Trump has as president to the people to
save the country.
By contrast, the cinematographer of text 2 uses close-up shots on the coach’s face
and his movements throughout the gym (1:03 to 1:27) to depict directly that he is the
one with the power. Coach Carter is shown as a person that’s standing separately
than the rest of the team and commanding them. The cinematographer uses cross-
cutting to show how the Coach and the team are on the other side. The showcase of
the Coach standing alone and the team as one shows that they are against each
other even though they have the same goal. He is talking about how he will be the
person to help them win and by using the word ‘winner’ repeatedly he motivates the
team into believing that they can actually win and fulfil their potential.
Both the characters show different ways of leadership. While Trump shows that he
is giving his power to the public and motivating them, Coach Carter shows that he is
alone against the team and will alone help them win as long as they cooperate and
follow his orders.

In conclusion, both the texts highlight the undermining and establishing of power by
using similar yet contrasting linguistics and cinematic techniques. As text 1 is a
speech, and text 2 is a clip from a movie, it is likely that the audience will find the
relationship of the people and the speaker in text 2 more relatable even though text 1
will be most influential because of it being a speech given by the USA's past
president.
