GLOBALIZATION AND MEDIA: CREATING THE GLOBAL VILLAGE

Questions:

1. Why is accuracy a basic element of most communication ethics?

2. What can companies and industries and other sectors of society do if they
believe the Mass media are not fair and balanced in their coverage?

3. As an individual, use a moral reasoning process in making decisions? How would

you describe that process?

4. Based on your observation, how do you rate the two giant television networks
(Channel 2 and 7) in terms of credibility and objectivity in their news coverage?

5. Based again on your observation and assessment, how do you rate the news
personalities of the two giant networks in terms of credibility, objectivity, accuracy,
and fairness?

Communication is what we all need to transfer and receive all the information for
us to be aware over everything and anything that’s happening in the world. So, in
applying ethics in the communication the flow of its information should have accuracy
in it. It is important to have such
accuracy in terms of communicating
because it serves as the channel to
share knowledge and give ideas for
the receiver to decide in particular
events/issues especially,
communication has so many
audiences that can access through
media outlets and technologies. It can
be considered the worst charges of
inaccuracy in a communication
especially in the field of media or
journalists whose purpose is to

convey reliable and factual information or news to everyone. On the other hand, the
news did not just carry a simple truth but they lead everyone to find the truth by the
content delivered by the news. Delivering inaccurate news or communication seems
to lead to harm and unfairness by the information that has been shared with others. It
is not enough that you have good intentions to mislead everyone in the way you
present information to others. You have to be somehow unbiased just to show the
accuracy of both sides of parties.

Big businesses, landowners both dominate the political and economic world
system and are covered by the law while the media sector itself has no general law as
a whole. Media sector is contained by legislation on press freedom, privacy, general
civil law, etc. However, companies and industries don't care about how media
coverage is delivered fairly and balanced. The companies and industries only chase
the chance to use the media as a form of advertisement to their products or services
and promote businesses
and opportunity to operate
with a privilege for their
brand to be known or
popular to the audiences
with the help of the scope of
the technologies that media
have in the industry. Media
as being unfair and not
balanced to their coverage
do not have any impact on
how these companies run in
the world of globalization.

They actually tend to buy shares

to the media companies for the
commercial’s success and that’s
just the focus value of the
industries to the media. They can
just suggest or voice out their
concerns but they cannot involve
it in the law even how much they
want to because the media is in
the form of freedom of speech or
press freedom as our country is

under a democratic governance. This is the thing that says about the limitation of the
companies and industries in the form of what the media covers in the issue or about
the works they have in a particular topic that they focus on.

Moral reasoning is knowledge and awareness over a situation or a thing that we

had since at our young age. It helps us to determine the decision we are going to
make by weighing what is right and wrong and identify the consequences in exchange
of our action and raising moral questions. Because it is inherent in our thinking and
habits since then we tend to recognize things by just logically applying these of what
will be good or bad for us and which a process of making a decision. And so, it is up
to us to decide how to respond and take action in a situation or something.

Based on my observation, I rate these two giant networks on how they respond
and understand the credibility and objectivity. First, I give channel 2 a rating of 6 out of
10 because of some issues I encountered while watching their news report. There are
so many errors in the credibility of their report like there was a time that they released
a statement allegedly said by a high official and eventually, it contacted them and said
that the statement first released by the network is fake news and brings false
information to everyone. And that was deliberately the worst charge on them
especially since they made an accusation. And it somehow affects the fact that it gives
a second thought to the audiences about the credibility that the network holds in the
industry. And not just that, in connection to the issue recently that their network faces
and the reason why their network will not allow them to operate and did not give them
a new franchise is because of the news that they seem to have scammed our
President Rodrigo Duterte when he was still running for the presidency. They did not
run his video campaign even though he had already paid for the airing slot and time of
his campaign and until the congress heard the case of their network, he had not been
reimbursed; and it is not just Duterte but there are still more candidates who have
experience the same issue about Abs-cbn not airs their ads during the campaign
period.

On the other hand, I give my rating of 8/10 to channel 7 because as well as, they
have some mistakes on the report they delivered where they accused Mayor Edgardo
Pamintuan allegedly saying that CPP-NPA was behind the killings of farmers in Nueva
Ecija. The Mayor immediately responded to the network that he didn’t say so and
appealed to the network and he almost filed a lawsuit against the network but they put
an action to it and they apologized and retracted the statement in their news. But in
the present I must say that their reporting is somehow credible because I can no
longer encounter such mistakes in their program aside from the technical problem.
And also what I just don't like is that they are so vulgar in showing their intense
competition on channel 2 even if the other channel faces a crisis that has severely
affected the network. They always show the ratings of all their programs which are
said to be ahead of the viewers anywhere in the Philippines even on the online
platform that’s how they compete with the other network that occupies the online
platform because their programs lack the franchise to operate and for me it seems
such a boastful action. But I know that it is part of the globalization that tightens the
competition in today’s era.

If I’m going to rate the personalities of the channel 2 I give them 7/10 because I
can see how they are so fearless in terms of delivering the news even though they
knew there were big people going to crash. They’re delivery in their news is clear,
objective, accurate but not quite fair. Yes, because sometimes I can feel in their news
and the delivery of it seems like they were on the one side only. While, I rate channel
7’s personalities a rate of 9/10 because of the excellency of their way and style. And
every program of their news and public affairs is such an eye opener in the
happenings in our country. They deliver information that impacts one’s awareness in a
particular topic or issue. I can also see how eager they are to announce relevant
news and the effort on how they will give an accurate, credible, objective and fair
reporting. And I admire them for that but still I can’t give them a perfect 10 because
not all reporters or journalists they have are the same. Some of them I can sense that
they do that because that is just their job and not a privilege and responsibility and its
kinda disappointing because others of them are deliberately unprofessional but again
major of them is excellent in their profession.

THE GLOBALIZATION AND RELIGIONS

Questions:

1. Is there such a thing as the best religion? Why?

2. Is it possible to have unity despite religious diversity?, How?

3. List down as many effects of globalization on Filipino religious practices

and beliefs that you have observed or experienced.

We cannot presumably tell that there is a best religion as every religion will claim
that their religion is the best. Because as long as you find that your faith grows in your
religion this means that it has a good impact on you as a human-being who believes in
a divine will and that makes you follow the principle and teaching of a/your religion.
The importance of it is that the religion can unite everyone in terms of believing in one
Creator who is the reason behind the guidance in our lives and the beliefs we have to
reveal the manifestation of God. The religion has its prophets who responds to the
calling of God and provides teaching in all
of human kinds which can be compared
as a children in a school that needed to be
taught by the teachings about one’s
religion for them to found the purpose of
their lives and show the gifts and
blessings of the Lord⏤to develop the
spiritual relationship with Him and the
spiritual and emotional maturity. Faith
should not be labeled as part of the
competitive marketplace instead this is a
unified system for us to be in the truth and
light.

In history, the government protects the religion that it is not considered as an illegal
activity, they remain neutral in the religion even to this day. But in the course of time and
over the years it seems that religion is considered by others to be the ‘cause of diversity
in terms of debating about their beliefs
and doctrines and not all of the religion
believes in one God and the Son Jesus
Christ. According to Dan Miller (2014),
“Our unity is not achieved despite our
diversity; our diversity strengthens our
unity, much as a compound of chemicals
forms a stronger substance.”, which is
true because we can use this divergence
to adopt and progress the exchange of
ideas to enhance the knowledge that
seems limited by what we believe in.
Because it is not disagreement is the
enemy instead, the enemy is the
narrowness of the brain in accepting the
beliefs of others, this is somehow hindered for all the religion to balance the unity and
diversity. Religion can be united as it requires immediate action as the eternal values
beyond self-interest.

Based on my observation and self experience, the religious practice in our church
has been affected by globalization. I was born in a religious family because of the
influence of my mother, we grew up in the beliefs of Protestant. I can say that our
religion really changed by its some practices in our church service because as what I
have remember and based on what my mother told us that in the past where technology
is not that dominant is that the church service is purely solemn where the main thing on
the church is piano, guitar, hymn books, bible and others that does not requires any
technology. But as the generation goes by, the type of service and activities inside our
church have changed . For example, at the present time we use a projector, laptop and
speakers as part of the service. And also we also now have praise and worship which a
band that plays a song praises that we offer to God,we use in the band a microphone,
some advanced technology that linked in a electric guitar, electric drum, speakers and
amplifiers that gives a lot of changes in the customary worship. I remember that the
president of our praise and worship once said that we have to innovate the kind and
style of our worship as the generation did not already accept some of the old-style of the
worship. So, as part of that we started to build a praise and worship team to be an
influence to the young generation and encourage them to bring out the talent or gift they
have and develop that to praise God and give him all the credit He deserves. And for us
Globalization and Religion Midterm Examination

to be a living testimony of how God loves each one of us and how great His power is
beyond all the things in this world even in the supernatural world.
