2. Consider Google as a system. Give an example of each type of input available to Google.

Give
examples of transformation processes and outputs at Google. What impact does the environment
have on Google and what impact does Google have on the environment?

According to Griffin and Moorhead, system and situational perspectives are the theory of
an organization's viewpoint. However, it has been modified and turns into four modern
approaches. These are the human resources approach, contingency approach, productivity
approach, and system approach.
The Human Resources Approach recognizes human resources as a central force of an
organization. Their development will contribute to the success of the organization. It provides for
the changes in the managerial role. It also requires managers to provide active support by treating
the employees as part of the group instead of controlling them.
The contingency approach, also known as the situational approach, stresses no single way
to manage effectively under all circumstances. The methods of behaviours that work effectively
in one situation may fail in another. The external environment and several aspects of the internal
environment govern the organizational structure and the processes of management. Effective
management processes will vary in different situations depending on the individuals and groups
in the organization, the nature of the job and technology, the environment facing the organization
and its structure. Thus, the manager must analyse each situation before acting. Effective
management needs different managerial practices and styles.
Productivity is the ratio of output to input as a measure of effectiveness. It also reveals
the efficiency of a manager in optimizing resource utilization. The higher the numerical value of
this ratio, the greater the efficiency. The productivity approach generally measures economic
inputs and outputs, but also human and social inputs or outputs.
The Systems Approach to organizational behaviour views the organization as a united,
purposeful system composed of interrelated parts. This approach gives managers a way of
looking at the organization as a whole, whole person, whole group, and the whole social system.
In doing so, the systems approach tells that the activity of any segment of an organization affects,
in varying degrees the activity of every other segment. A systems view should be the concern of
every person in an organization.
Among the theories, Google have to work on one particular approach, which is the
system approach or perspective. Google as a system receives four kinds of inputs from its
environment. These are the material, human, financial and information. Material inputs may
contain computers, servers, network connectivity devices, and other technological devices used
to operate search engine. Human inputs include computer programmer, developers, diversified
Google personnel and office staff. Financial inputs are money received from friends and
professors, investors, advertisers, and shares of stock. Thus, Google has an information input
about cost efficiency and growth profitability, innovations of services offered, different
consumer expectations, and different opportunities including restrictions. All of these material
inputs will go through the process of creating algorithms, building search interface, services and
search engine optimization. However, human inputs will run through management development,
training and welfare, while financial inputs will go through cost computing and projecting
income. The human outputs would be the increase of competencies of employees, higher
productivity, and better quality of human resource and the financial outputs are the financial
reports information. As the main outputs, the unique search engine with different features and its
formulated software will be offering to the public or users.
The impact of the environment has on Google towards diversity of the people. As Google
is expanding worldwide, the workforce and employees are also diversified. Google’s site is
available in 160 different local country domains and 117 languages. In each country, the
company faces different opportunities and different consumer expectations, and different
restrictions. According to Google's website statement, the diversity of their employees and
partners serves as the foundation for the company to serve better the diverse customers and
stakeholders all over the world. They continually work perfect a work environment that is
inclusive, collaborative, and all innovative. Google personnel include one-third women and one-
third racial minorities. Benefits such as healthcare insurance, childcare assistance,
telecommuting, and tuition reimbursement support diverse employees. Employee-driven groups
for diversity support include Google Women Engineers, Black Googlers Network, Hispanic
Googlers Network, and the Gayglers. Google is also involved in several ethical issues. Google’s
computer servers likely consume electricity to power several mid-sized American cities. Google
is one of the largest companies to enthusiastically embrace and promote energy saving
technologies. The company installed solar panels that make up the largest corporate energy
system in the United States. The company plans to reduce its carbon footprint, its contribution to
global warming to zero. On the other hand, Google.org, the company's non-profit charity
organization, supports the company's energy initiatives. The organization focuses on three global
causes and these are climate change, public health and poverty. Among the foundation’s projects
are development of a plug -in electric vehicle and more efficient and affordable clean renewable
energy sources.
