Exercise 12

Evaluate the following:

1) 5P3

nPr = n! / (n-r)!
= 5!/ (5-3)!
= 120/2
= 60

2) 10P6

nPr = n! / (n-r)!
= 10!/ (10-6)!
= 10!/4!
= 3,628,800 /24
= 151,200

3) (5P2) (8P3)

nPr = n! / (n-r)!
= 5!/ (5-2)!
= 120/6
= 20

nPr = n! / (n-r)!
= 8!/ (8-3)!
= 40,320/120
= 336

4) 15P10

nPr = n! / (n-r)!
= 15!/ (15-10)!
= 15! /5!
= 1.08972864E + 10
= 10,897,286,400

5) nPn-r

Answer the following:

1. In how many ways can you seat three students and two teachers in arrow of four chairs?
The three students and two teachers can seat in a row of four chairs in 120 ways.

Solution:
nPr = n! / (n-r)!
= 5! / (5-4)!
= 120 / 1
= 120
2. How many ways can you arrange the letters of the word “MISSISSIPPI”?
There are 34,650 permutations of the word “MISSISSIPPI”.

Solution:
Here are the frequency of each letter: M=1, I=4, S=4, and P=2, there are 11 letters
nPn = n! / (n1!n2!,n3!...nk!)
=11!/ (1! 4! 4! 2!)
= 39,916,800/ (1*24*24*2)
= 39,916,800/ 1,152
= 34,650

3. How many ways can you sit 12 children in a round table?

The 12 children can sit in a round table in 39,916,800 ways.

Solution:
nPn = (n-1)!
= (12-1)!
= 11!
= 39,916,800

4. Carlo has 6 different colored gem stones, including sapphire and pearl. In how many ways
can he arrange the beads in a string –

a. If there are no restrictions

Carlo can arrange the six different colored gemstones in 720 ways.

Solution:
nPn = n!
= 6!
= 720

b. So that the sapphire and pearl are adjacent to each other.

Carlo can arrange six different colored gemstones, which sapphire and pearl
are adjacent, in 15 ways.

Solution:
nPn = n! / (n1!n2!,n3!...nk!)
= 6! / (4! 2!)
= 720/48
= 15
