1 point - answer

1. A license plate begins with three numbers. If the possible numbers are 1,2,3,4,
and 5, how many different permutations of these numbers can be made if no
number is used more than once?

Solution :

 Given : 3 Numbers
5 Numbers

 Given Formula : nPr = n!/(n-r)!

Answer :

 nPr = n!/(n-r)!
 5P3 = 5!/(5-3)!
 5P3 = 5!/(2)!
 5P3 = 5*4*3*2*1!/(2)!
 5P3 = 120!/(2)!
 5P3 = 60; therefore, there are 60 different permutations of these numbers.

2. In how many ways can a president, a treasurer and a secretary be chosen from
among 10 candidates?

Solution :

 Given : President
Treasurer
Secretary
10 Candidate

 Given Formula : Permutation : nPr = n!/(n-r)!

Answer :

 nPr = n!/(n-r)!
 10P3 = 10!/(10-3)!
 10P3 = 10!/(7)!
 10P3 = 10*9*8*7*6…*1!/(7*6*5*4*…*1)!
 10P3 = 720; therefore, there are 720 distinguishable permutations in
choosing between a president, a treasurer, and a secretary.

3. A zip code contains 4 digits. How many different zip codes can be made with the
digits 1–9 if no digit is used more than once?

Solution :

 Given : 4 Digits
9 Digits

 Given Formula : nPr = n!/(n-r)!

Answer :

 nPr = n!/(n-r)!
 9P4 = 9!/(9-4)!
 9P4 = 9!/(5)!
 9P4 = 9*8*7*6*5*4*3*2*1!/(5*4*3*2*1)!
 9P4 = 9*8*7*6 = 3, 024; Therefore, there are 3, 024 different ways for a zip
code can be made.

QUIZ #1 - MATH 10 - 4th Quarter 2

4. How many different ways can 5 students line up?

Solution :

 Given : 5 Students

Answer :

 Factorization : 5 Students
 N(Different Ways) = Factors of 5 : 5*4*3*2*1
 N(Different Ways) = 120; therefore, there are 120 different ways that the
5 students can line up.

5. Find 7P3.

Solution :

 Given : n = 7
r=3

 Given Formula : nPr = n!/(n-r)!

Answer :

 nPr = n!/(n-r)!
 7P3 = 7!/(7-3)!
 7P3 = 7!/(4)!
 7P3 = 7*6*5*4*3*2*1!/(4*3*2*1)!
 7P3 = 7*6*5* = 210; therefore, there are 210 distinguishable permutations
in the given formula.

6. How many ways can the letters of the word MATHEMATICS be arranged?

Solution :

QUIZ #1 - MATH 10 - 4th Quarter 3

 Given : M = 2
A=2
T=2
H=1
E=1
C=1
S=1

 Given Formula : n!/r!

Answer :

 n!/r! = 11!/(2*2*2)!
 n!/r! = 11*10*9*8*…*1!/(8)!
 n!/r! = 39, 916, 800!/8!
 n!/r! = 4 989 600; therefore, there are 4 989 600 that the letters in the word
“MATHEMATICS” can be arranged.

7. How many ways can you order 2 blue marbles, 4 red marbles and 5 green
marbles? Marbles of the same color look identical.

Solution :

 Given : 2 Blue Marbles

4 Red Marbles
5 Green Marbles

 Given Formula : n!/r!

Answer :

 n!/r! = 11!/(2!*4!*5!)
 n!/r! = 11*10*9*8*…*1!/(2*1*4*3*2*1*5*4*3*2*1)!
 n!/r! = 11!/(2*24*120)!
 n!/r! = 39, 916, 800!/5760!
 n!/r! = 6, 930; therefore, there are 6, 930 ways for you to order the
marbles.

8. Find the number of distinguishable permutations of the given letters

“AABBBC”.

Solution :

 Given : A = 2

QUIZ #1 - MATH 10 - 4th Quarter 4

B=3
C=1

 Given Formula : n!/r!

Answer :

 n!/r!
 N(Distinguishable Permutations) = 6!/(2*3*1)!
 N(Distinguishable Permutations) = 6*5*4*3*2*1!/(2*1*3*2*1*1)!
 N(Distinguishable Permutations) = 720!/(2*6*1)!
 N(Distinguishable Permutations) = 720!/12!
 N(Distinguishable Permutations) = 72; therefore, there are 72
distinguishable permutations of the given letters.
