Donning and Removing Cap, Mask and Sterile Gloves

Definition and Purpose


Gloving is wearing of gloves on clean hands. It is used during medical examination and
procedures to help prevent cross contamination between caregivers and patients.
Consideration
 Always do handwashing before and after wearing gloves. Clean hands reduce the
number of microorganisms that could be transmitted if gloves accidentally puncture
or tear.
 Explain to the client what you are going to do. Why it is necessary and how she or
he can cooperate
 Provide privacy
Supplies and Materials
 Disposable or washable cap and mask
 Package of sterile gloves
 Flat and clean surface
Preparation
 Assess allergy to latex
 Assemble equipment and supplies: Sterile gloves- appropriate size
 Ensure sterility of the package of gloves.
Procedure
1. Before entering the delivery room wear disposable or washable mask and cap
properly.
2. In wearing mask, note that the white slide touches the face and make sure it covers
the nose, mouth and chin.
3. Cap must completely cover the hair and ears.
4. Upon entering the delivery room properly identify which gloves should be worn for
each hand.
5. Place the package of the sterile gloves in a flat, dry, clean surface.
6. Open the outer pack of the gloves and make as a sterile drape at the flat surface.
7. Observe margin of safety by keeping away from the edge of the table.
8. Open the inner package according to manufacturer’s direction.
9. Pluck the flap so that the fingers do not touch the inner surfaces to avoid
contamination.
10. Using the thumb and the index finger of the dominant hand, touch only the inside of
the folded cuff to prevent contamination of the sterile side of the gloves, place the
glove on the non-dominant hand.
11. Leave the cuff turn down.
12. Insert your gloved fingers on the cuff of the second glove then place it on your
dominant hand.
13. Ensure that the glove hand never touch the skin of the palm and arm.
14. Carefully pull the cuffs up by sliding the fingers under the cuffs, and make sure it is
fitted properly.
REMOVAL OF GLOVES:
In removing gloves, apply the principles of aseptic technique:
1. first glove to glove side technique then skin to skin side technique.
2. Dispose it observing the infection control measures
3. Remove cap and mask properly
4. And document the procedure
