1. What is drain-waste-vent (DWV) system?

- Drain-waste-vent (DWV) system is designed to carry waste and water out of the house
and eliminate gurgles or fumes.

2. What are the four (4) elements of DWV system? Describe each.
a) Drainpipes- consists of a main stack and secondary stack. Main stack 3-4
inches in diameter and runs up through the roof. Secondary stack is smaller,
2-3 inches in diameter and serve system branches.

b) Branch drainpipes- are usually 1.5 – 2 inches in diameter. It provides

drainage from individual fixtures to a stack. Older drain stacks were made of
cast iron. Cast iron stacks rust out over time. Galvanized steel was the next
iteration of the system. Galvanized steel systems were susceptible to rust and
corrosion. ABS plastic systems are constructed from long lasting PVC.
Drainpipes must be installed wit a continual downward slope to facilitate
drainage. Modern systems utilize sweeping turns to avoid clogs. Equipped with
plugs to facilitate access for clearing clogs.

c) Main drain line- Water flows downward through the system to the main drain
line. Drain lines lead to the municipal sewage systems or septic system.
Porous main line can be impeded by tree roots.

3. Why do we need venting?

 Without proper venting, pipes flow irregularly
 Irregular flow results in gurgling and fume build up
 Venting allows air into the system behind the water flow
