Over the next 3 weeks you will prepare, plan and practise an individual speech for your GCSE Spoken Language Unit. This
week we will focus on understanding what a passionate speech looks like, as well as choosing your own topic.
These will be presented when you return to school and assessed by your class teacher.
The speech can be on ANY topic of your choice.
You will be required to answer questions about your topic
You can use cue cards, props and power point slides to help you prepare and perform your speeches with confidence.
The speech should be a minimum of 5 minutes and a maximum of 10 minutes long, including questions.
1. What does audible mean? How can you ensure your listener can hear you clearly?
2. What does sophisticated mean? How can you ensure your vocabulary is sophisticated?
3. What are 5 key conventions (typical features or strategies) of writing a speech?
4. What do you think is meant by the ‘needs of the listener’? If you were watching a speech, what would you expect from
the speaker? Can you think of any methods which might make your listener feel involved?
5. The structure of your speech is also important. What can you use in your speech writing to help you LINK and DEVELOP
your ideas and information? What other structural features could be used?

Watch the speech examples provided below. What is it that makes them successful? How do they engage their audience? How
do they achieve their purpose (to persuade/ inform/ advise/ warn/ motivate)? How do they organise their ideas clearly?

You can choose any topic you like! The key is to choose a topic you are passionate about and can explore at length.
If you love playing sport, or have a particular hobby or interest, why not inform your audience about it and show off a few skills?
Consider your chosen Option subjects; you could discuss a particular topic you enjoyed or wish to explore further. A good
starting point is to think about things you LIKE and are PASSIONATE about as this will show in your presentation! Conversely,
things you dislike, or are opposed against, can also make an interesting speech!
If you are aiming for a distinction, it’s worth choosing a topic which allows you to discuss the topic in detail. For example: The Nature v Nurture
debate, a key person in society/history, the evolution of gender. You can find some more examples here:
