1)If you were in class today then tell me what you read or watched in class today.

(Give me the
link to the website or video). Also- tell me in your own words something you learned from it in
class time.

We read the textbook in class. The textbook mentioned how the native tribes traveled in terms of
trading with each other and how their daily activities were like, what kind of environment they
lived in. I learned that some tribes were more matrilineal than others. For example, the Iroquois
tribe was matrilineal and the Sioux tribe. Unlike the norms, the women had more agency over the
family.

2) Now- you must find something to read or watch for another 20 minutes at home for
homework. It can be the same thing you started in class and now you finish, or you can find
something different to read or watch....

a) Read or watch it for at least 20 minutes

b) Tell me the link to what you read or watched at home

c) Tell me in your own words what you learned in these 20 minutes.

Sioux Religion

The Sioux tribe consists of three major subdivisions: the Lakota, the Dakota, and the Nankota. The tribe
believed that the “Great Spirit/Great Mystery” is the one who created the universe. The symbol for their
religion is called the “sacred hoop”, it is supposed to highlight and demonstrate that all things in the
universe are connected. They believe that by praying you are connecting with the spiritual beings or
ancestors. Similarly, they believe that dreams are a way to connect with the spirits and are crucial to the
Ochethi Sakowin. They say that through dreams you can gain supernatural powers, and if you dream of
the Wakinyan (thunder beings), it would turn you into a Heyokha (a sacred clown).

Sioux Gender Roles

There were very specific gender roles in the Sioux tribe. The men were supposed to go hunting and travel
outside the village. The women were in charge of the house and had to make clothes and other similar
tasks. There were instances where some men would not partake in the roles that they were supposed to so
they would do traditional duties done by women, these men were called wintke. For women who did the
same thing and did not take charge of their assigned roles, they were called witkowin (“crazy woman”).
These women would have rejected their roles of being a mother or wife to be a prostitute.
