Research Plan

Question or Problem being addressed

Mosquito- transmitted diseases remain a major cause of the

loss of human life worldwide, more than 700 million people

suffering from these diseases annually (Taubiz et al. 1997.).

Despite its debilitating effects, lympathic filariasis is given

a very low control priority (Ramaiah et al. 2000).

Goals/Expected Outcomes/Hypothesis

This study aims to discover the potential of yeast

(Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and sugar (sucrose) against mosquito

transmit such as malaria, fiariasis, dengue, and Japanese

encephalitis.

C.1 Procedures

Collection

 Yeast and brown sugar will be taken in the grocery store

or market.

 The sample will be measured with clean measuring cup and

in a half plastic bottle.

2
Making of Mosquito bait

 Brown sugar will be the first one to boil into hot water

and when sugar mixtures reaches correct temperature then

you can gently mix in the yeast.

 Samples will be brought to the Vicente Andaya Sr. Natl.

High school, in STE building.

 The samples will be placed inside the bottle to create a

carbon dioxide plume that lures the bugs into trap.

Preparations of Treatments

 The solid paste samples will be diluted in hot water to

avail the following treatment:

Treatment 1- 1/4 cup brown sugar.

Treatment 2- 1 gram of yeast.

Preparation of Culture Medium

 The laboratory tools will be prepared by the in

charge/research teacher and all needed materials will be

provided by the researchers.

3
 Approximately 1/4 cup of sugar will be diluted in 1 and

1/3 cups of hot water into the lower half of the bottle

and 1 gram of yeast will be added to produce carbon

dioxide which attract mosquitoes.

 The melted sugar will be allowed to cool at 20 minutes

before adding the yeast unto the bottle.

Preparation of Sample

 The 1 grams of yeast will be diluted in 1/4 cup of brown

sugar into the lower half of the bottle.

 The yeast and brown sugar will be boiled in a 120-130

degrees F. this will allow the mosquito bait to take the

trap.

Preparation in Mosquito bait

 The hot water will be pour to the lower half of the bottle

for the mixtures of sugar and yeast.

 When the mix of sugar thoroughly dissolve completely,

allow it to cool until can comfortable stick your finger

and gently mix in the yeast when the mixtures reaches

correct temperature.

4
 Stir it until the mixtures completely dissolve and the

mosquito trap is ready.

 Place the half upside down inside the bottom part of the

bottle so the insects can fly into the trap and die from

suffocation or starvation.

 Duct tape will be used to secure the edges of the bottle,

it will suffice to keep the edges in place.

 Place the trap on a study surface near the mosquitos,

notice when the bottle is full of dead insects or is

ineffective.

 When the bottle is full of insects even if two weeks have

not passed, change the yeast and sugar solution when

necessary.

Disposal

 The materials will be disposed properly and the working

are and the laboratory tools will be cleaned.

Data and Data Gathering Procedures

 Results will be based on the numbers of mosquito that will

die inside the bottle if it is effective.

5
 We will see if the yeast and sugar is effective in terms

of ability to kill and trap the mosquito.

 To gather the data, we will give survey sheet individually

to our respondents.
