MILLING MACHINE

1. Define Milling

Answer:Milling may be defined as the machining process which is used to remove

excess material from the work-piece with a rotating multi-point cutter called
milling cutter.

INVOLUTE GAER CUTTER -HORIZONTAL milling

Sheer or end milling cutter - vertical milling

horizontal motor pully in vertical

Continuous chips are formed when the ductile material is machined with high
cutting speed and minimum friction between the chip and tool face.

2. Name different types of Knee and Column type milling machines.

Answer:

Horizontal Milling Machine

Vertical Milling Machine

Universal Milling Machine

Omniversal Milling Machine

3. What are the specifications of the milling machine?

Answer:1. The table length &width.

2. Number of spindle speeds &feeds.

3. Power of driving motor.

4. What are the properties of cutting fluid?

Answer:1. High heat absorbing capacities.

2. It should have good lubricant properties.

3. High flash point.

4. It should be odorless.

5. It should be non-corrosive to work & tool.

What is the function of cutting fluids?

1. It is used to cool the cutting tool & the work piece.

2. It improves the surface finish as stated earlier.

3. It causes the chips to break up into small parts.

4. It protects the finish surface from corrosion.

5. It prevents the corrosion of work & machine.

5. Name principal parts of knee and column type milling machine.

Answer:

Base
Column

Knee

Saddle

Table

Spindle

Overarm

Arbor

6. What are the limitations of a milling machine?

Answer:The major limitations of a milling machine are as follows:

Milling machine is mostly used for machining jobs of smaller size

Its speed is slow for machining long jobs

Cutting tool is costlier

7. Name two milling methods:

Answer:Conventional milling (Up Milling) Climb milling (Down Milling)

8. Define conventional milling

Answer:In conventional milling, the cutting tool rotates in the opposite direction
to the movement of table. In the conventional or up milling, the chip starts at zero
thickness gradually increases to the maximum size.
9. Define Climb milling

Answer:When the feed motion is in the same direction as that of motion of the
cutter, the milling is known as climb milling or down milling. In climb milling, the
chip starts at maximum thickness and goes to zero thickness gradually.

10. Define milling cutter.

Answer:A hardened steel disc or cylinder on which the cutting teeth are arranged
either on its periphery or on its end or on both is called milling cutter. Usually the
cutter is held in a fixed, but rotating position and the work-piece passes the cutter
during the machining operation.

11. Name the materials used for milling cutters.

Answer:Milling cutters are generally made of high speed steel or sintered

carbides.

12. What is plain milling cutter?

Answer:It is also called slab milling cutter and is basically cylindrical with the
cutting teeth on its periphery. It is generally used for machining flat surfaces.

13. What is a side milling cutter?

Answer:This cutter is similar to plain milling cutter except that is has teeth on its
sides also. These cutters may have straight, spiral or staggered teeth. Further
these may be solid, inserted blade or tipped construction and may be profile
sharpened or form relieved.
14. What is the use of metal slitting saw cutter?

Answer:It is used for cutting deep slots and parting off materials into pieces.

15. Define angle milling cutter.

Answer:Any milling cutter which has cutting teeth at an angle to the axis of
rotation is known as angle milling cutter.
16. What does term indexing mean?

2 rotation

Indexing is the process of dividing the periphery of a job into equal number of divisions.

17. List out the various milling operations?

1. Plain or slab milling.

2. Face milling.

3. Angular milling.

4. Gang milling.

5. End milling.

6. Gear cutting.
LATH MACHINE
we used Mild steel (MS) rod of ~40mm original diameter

mild steel contain approximately .05-.3% carbon

on lathe machine we used single point cutting tool made of high speed steet(HSS) for
machining operations

lathe machine made of cast iron( by casting process) bcz it have high compressive strength and
vibration absorbing capacity

difference btw lathe, milling and drilling....

various operations on lathe machine like knurling, drilling, facing, turning, taper-turning

chamfering, boring, knurling, threading.....etc dekh lena

common operations that we can do lathe and milling machine are

drilling/boring, facing, grooving....etc

1. What are the various operations can be performed on a lathe?

1. Turning 6. Thread cutting 11. Grooving

2. Facing 7. Drilling

3. Forming 8. Boring

4. Knurling 9. Recessing

5. Chamfering 10. Tapping

2. State specification of lathe?

1.The height of centers from the bed

2. The maximum length of the bed

3.What are principle parts of the lathe?

Bed, headstock, tailstock, carriage, cross slide, tool post

4. What is an apron?

The integral part of several gears, levers clutches mounted with the saddle for moving the
garriage along with lead screw while thread cutting
