1.1. AboutThisManual
This manual is intended to be a complete reference for the installation, operation, and service of the Fike Single
Hazard Panel Professional (SHPͲPro) Fire Alarm/Suppression Control System. The information contained in this
manualmustbeutilizedbythefactorytrainedFikedistributorinordertoproperlyinstall,testandservicetheSHPͲ
Pro.ThismanualcanalsobeusedbytheenduserasanOperationsManualfortheSHPͲPro.
Beforeyourefertoanysectioninthismanual,andbeforeyouattempttoinstallorusetheSHPͲPro,besuretoread
theimportantsafetynoticesinSection1.5.
Thismanualisdividedintosectionsforeasyreference.ThefirstͲtimeinstallerand/orusershouldthoroughlyread
andunderstandtheinstructionscontainedwithinthismanualbeforeusingthisdevice.Theseinstructionsmustbe
followed to avoid possible damage to the SHPͲPro itself or adverse operating conditions caused by improper
installationandprogramming.

If you have a question or encounter a problem not covered in this manual, you should first try to contact the
distributor that installed the protection system. Fike has a worldwide distribution network. Each distributor sells,
installs, and services Fike equipment. Look on the inside of the door, left side, there should be a sticker with an

Thefollowingarevarioustermsusedinthismanualwithabriefdescriptionofeach:
:ͲSymbolfor“ohm”.Unitofresistance.
ACNormalState(“ACNormal”GreenLEDON)ͲThesystemisintheACNormalstatewhenappropriateACpoweris
beingappliedtothesystem.
AbortͲAninputtoasuppressionsystemtopreventanunwanteddischargeoffiresuppressantagent.TheSHPͲPro
hasseveraldifferentaborttypes.
Alarm State (“Alarm” Red LED ON, Piezo pulsing) Ͳ The alarm occurs when an input circuit configured for alarm
operationhasbeen activated. Activation typically initiated by adetector or contact device. The system leaves the
alarmstateuponentryintothepreͲdischargeorreleasestate.
ClassAwiringͲInputcircuitscapableoftransmittinganalarmsignalduringasingleopenoranonͲsimultaneoussingle
ground fault on a circuit conductor shall be designated as Style D or Class A. Similarly, output circuits capable of
activatingduringasingleopenoranonͲsimultaneousgroundfaultonacircuitconductorshallbedesignatedasStyleZ
or Class A. Commonly referred to as redundant or 4Ͳwire connection; this manual refers to 4Ͳwire connections as
ClassAwiring.
Class B wiring Ͳ Input circuits incapable of transmitting and alarm signal beyond the location of the fault condition
(listed for Class A wiring above) shall be designated as Style B or Class B. Similarly, output circuits incapable of
operatingbeyondthelocationofthefaultconditionshallbedesignatedasStyleYorClassB.Thismanualrefersto2Ͳ
wireconnectionsasClassBwiring
InitiatingDeviceͲAsystemcomponentthatoriginatestransmissionofachangeͲofͲstatecondition,suchasinasmoke
detector,manualfirealarmbox,orsupervisoryswitch.Thismanualinterchangesthetermsinitiatingdeviceandinput
device.

Initiating Device Circuit Ͳ A circuit to which automatic or manual initiating devices are connected where the signal
receiveddoesnotidentifytheindividualdeviceoperated.Thismanualinterchangesthetermsinitiatingdevicecircuit
andinputcircuit.
NormalState(“Trouble”YellowLEDOFF)ͲThesystemisinthenormalstatewhenthepowersupplyandallcircuits
are configured properly, connected, and responding properly. The system remains in normal state until a trouble
conditionoccurs.
CrossͲzoneDetectionͲAdetectionschemewheretwodetectorsmustactivatebeforethesystementersintothepreͲ
dischargestate:atleastonedetectorfromeachdetectioninitiatingcircuitmustbeactive.
Notification Appliance Ͳ A fire alarm system component such as a bell, horn, speaker, light, or textual display that
provides audible, tactile, or visible output, or any combination thereof. The device notifies building occupants of
systemstatus.Thismanualinterchangesthetermsnotificationandaudibleappliance.
Notification Appliance Circuit Ͳ A circuit or path directly connected to a notification appliance(s). This manual
interchangesthetermsnotificationappliancecircuitandaudiblecircuit.
NonͲPower Limited Ͳ A circuit designation given for wiring purposes. The amount of current flowing through the
circuitisunlimitedvs.beinglimited,orpowerlimited.ACpowerandBatterywiringisNonͲPowerLimited.
PowerLimitedͲAcircuitdesignationgivenforwiringpurposes.Theamountofcurrentflowingthroughthecircuitis
limited(typicallybyfuse)vs.beingunlimited,ornonͲpowerͲlimited.TheSHPͲProinputandoutputcircuitsarepowerͲ
limited.Thecircuithasamaximumpowerthatflowsthroughitoritcurrentlimitsandopensthecircuit.
PreͲdischarge Delay Ͳ The time (in seconds) that the system will delay entering the release state after the zone’s
detectiontypehasbeensatisfied.Activationofanabortswitchwillhaveaneffectonthisvalue,dependinguponthe
aborttypeselected.
PreͲdischargeState(“Alarm”RedLEDON,Piezochirping)ͲThepreͲdischargestateoccurswhenthezone’sdetection
type input conditions are satisfied (CrossͲzone Detection, Sequential Alarm Detection, or Single Detector Release).
Upontimedelaycountdowncompletion(unlessdelayedbyapertinentactivatedabortinput),thesystemleavesthe
preͲdischargestateandentersthereleasestate.
ReleaseState(“Alarm”RedLEDON,Piezochirping)ͲThereleasestateoccursuponcompletionofthepreͲdischarge
state or upon activation of a manual release input. At the start of the release state, output circuits configured for
releasingshalloperate
SequentialDetectionͲAdetectionschemewherethesumtotalofactivedetectorsonthedetectioninitiatingcircuits
mustbetwoormorebeforethesystemwillenterthepreͲdischargestate.
SingleDetectorReleaseDetectionͲAdetectionschemewhereactivationofonedetectorcausesthesystemtoenter
the preͲdischarge state. SDR (Single Detector Release) detector(s) are installed on initiating circuits setup for
sequentialdetection.
SolenoidOnTimeͲThetime(inminutes)thatthesolenoidisactivateduponenteringthereleasestate.Resetofthe
systemoverridesthisvalue.
SupervisoryState(“Supervisory”YellowLEDON,PiezoWarble)ͲThesupervisorystateoccursuponactivationofa
supervisory input circuit. The supervisory state is nonͲlatching and will follow the status of the supervisory input
contact.
Trouble State (“Trouble” Yellow LED ON, Piezo Constant) Ͳ The trouble state occurs upon any detectable condition
which could impair system operation including connection problems, ground faults, hardware problems, power
problems, configuration problems, or prematurely activated abort inputs. Certain trouble conditions are latching;
othersallowthesystemtoresetupontroubleconditionremoval.Dependinguponthetypeoftroublecondition,the
systemmayormaynotremainoperational.Whenthesystemisintroublestate,itisnotinthenormalstate.

1.5. SafetyNotices
Becertaintoreadallthefollowingwarningsandcautionsbeforeinstallingorusingthisdevice.Accidentaldamageto
thedevicecouldresultifthesewarningsandcautionsareNOTheeded!
CAUTION: The SHPͲPro contains static sensitive components. Handle the electronics by the
edges only and avoid touching the integrated components. Keep the electronics in
theprotectivestaticbagsitwasshippedinuntiltimeforinstallation.Alwaysground
yourself with a proper wrist strap before handling the module(s). If the installer is
properlygroundedatalltimes,damageduetostaticdischargewillnotoccur.Ifthe
modulerequiresrepairorreturntoFike,itmustbeshippedinanantiͲstaticbag.
CAUTION: ToensurepropersystemoperationafterinstallationoftheSHPͲPro,thisdevicemust
be tested in accordance with NFPA 72. ReͲacceptance testing is required after any
change,additionordeletionofsystemcomponents,orafteranymodification,repairor
adjustmenttosystemhardwareorwiring.
WARNING: Failure to disconnect power to the releasing circuit(s) and completely disarm the
solenoid(s)oranyother"criticaloperation"contactspriortosystemtestingmaycause
accidentalactivationofthesystem.
1.6. FCCCompliance
ThisequipmenthasbeentestedandfoundtocomplywiththelimitsforClassAdigitaldevice,pursuanttoPart15of
the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference when the
equipment is operated in a commercial environment. This equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio
frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instruction manual, may cause harmful
interference to radio communications. Operation of this equipment in a residential area is likely to cause harmful

the five initiating device circuits to be wired Class A (Style D)
versus the standard Class B (Style B). The Class A module

3.1.5. StandbyBatteries
Batteries are required for alarm systems for maintaining
emergency backͲup power. Two each 12V batteries are
requiredandaretobewiredinseriesformaintaininga24VDC
backͲup. Most systems require at least a 24 hour standby
currentwith5minutesalarmcurrentfordeterminingminimum
battery size. Refer to Appendix 1 for Battery Calculation form

5. INSTALLATION
SysteminstallationisindependentofwhetherthemoduleswereorderedseparatelyoraspartofacompleteSHPͲPro
system.Foroptionalmodulesnotused,skiptheinstructionsdetailingtheirinstallation.Propersysteminstallation
requiresfollowingstepsoutlinedinthissectionofthemanualinorder.
Unless otherwise detailed in this manual, or in other documents relating to this control panel, the technician shall
utilize published standards and references such as NFPA 70 National Electrical Code, NFPA 72 National Fire Alarm
Code,NFPA2001StandardforCleanAgentFireExtinguishingSystems,andotherswhichmayberelevanttotheLocal
AuthorityHavingJurisdictionforinstallationofthesystem.
5.1. Enclosure
Mounting Location Ͳ The mounting location for the control panel enclosure is very important. Vibration, dust,
moisture, electromagnetic interference, and radio frequency interference are all types of problems that could
adversely affect the successful operation of the equipment. Choose a mounting location that is free from
environmentalproblems.RefertoSection4.0,Specifications,fortheexacttemperatureratingsoftheequipment.Do
notinstallinanenvironmentthatexceedsthesetemperatureranges.
CAUTION:TheSHPͲProControlSystemenclosureisnotfirerated.DonotinstallonorinaFireRatedWall.
Mounting Ͳ The control panel should be installed so the viewing window is approximately60” above the floor. The
backͲboxcanbesurfaceorflushmountedasdesired.Forsurfacemounting,utilizethefour‘tearͲdrop’openingsin
thebackofthebox.Forflushmounting,cuttheopeninginthewalltofitthe21”highby14.35"widebackͲbox.Refer
toSection4.5forenclosurespecificationsanddimensions.
Electrical Entrance Ͳ Determine the maximum number of conductors needed fromthe design.Wire is to be routed
into the enclosure via knockͲout openings provided in the backͲbox. Refer to Section 4.5. Conduit knockͲouts are
provided on all four sides of the enclosure backͲbox for two distinct conduit sizes. Removing just the inside hole
createsa½”inch(12.7mm)opening.Removingtheentireopeningprovidesa¾”inch(19mm)opening.
5.2. Modules
Systemmodulesshallnotbeinstalleduntilaftertheenclosurehasbeeninstalledandthoroughlycleanedofalldust
anddebris.Eachmoduleisshippedwiththeappropriatemountinghardwaretofacilitatecomponentinstallation.
CAUTION: The SHPͲPro Control System contains static sensitive components. Handle the module by the
edgesonlyandavoidtouchingtheintegratedcomponents.Keepthemoduleintheprotective
static bags it was shipped in until time for installation. Always ground yourself with a proper
wrist strap before handling the module(s). If the installer is properly grounded at all times,
damageduetostaticdischargewillnotoccur.IfthemodulerequiresrepairorreturntoFike,it
mustbeshippedinanantiͲstaticbag.

Route all field wiring through the appropriate conduit knockouts providing adequate wire length for strain relief.
Maintain separation between power limited andnonͲpower limited wiring within the enclosure as describedbelow

NonͲpowerlimitedwiringͲSHPͲProbottomside(P1)connectionsincludingACPower,andstandbybatteriesarenonͲ

Power limited wiring Ͳ SHPͲPro top (P3) and right side (P4 & P5) connections are power limited and shall not be
routed within 2” (51 mm) of the enclosure’s left side to ensure segregation from the nonͲpower limited wiring as
showninFigure32.

6.3. AbortTypes
ActivationofanABORTswitchdelaysreleasesinitiatedbytheSHPͲPro’sautomaticdetectionschemesasdescribed
below.ActivationofaManualReleaseinputcircuitwilloverridethesystemabortoperationandinitiateagentrelease
immediately.
AborttypesareprogrammableviatheSW4configurationswitchesS9andS10.Countdownstartswhenthesystem
entersthepreͲdischargestate.
TYPE1:TheabortiseffectiveonlyifactiveuponentryintopreͲdischargestate.Countdowncontinuesduringabort
activation. Upon abort deactivation (during preͲdischarge), the release cannot again be aborted, so release occurs
upon countdown completion. Conforms to Industrial Risk Insurers (IRI) requirements. Does not conform to UL
requirements.
TYPE2:Countdowncontinuesduringabortactivation.Releaseoccurswhenboththecountdowniscompletedand
theabortisdeactivated.
TYPE3:IftheabortisactiveduringpreͲdischarge,releaseoccursuponabortdeactivation.
TYPE4:Uponabortdeactivation,countdownoccursfromthefullprogrammedcountdowntime.Priortocountdown
completion, abort activation extends the countdown time to the programmed length. Does not conform to UL
requirements,butisallowedbysomeLocalAuthorityHavingJurisdiction.
Type 4 (NYC mode): When the SHPͲPro is set for Application #4 – Industrial operation, the panel abort type is
hardcodedtoAbortType4asindicatedinSection6.1.4.SettingSW4PreͲdischargedelaydipͲswitches7and8tothe
“OFF”positionwillnotgivethe0secondpreͲdischargedelayasindicated.Itwillcausethesystemtooperateusinga
“NYC”abortmode.Inthismodethepanelwillinitiatea90secondAlarmverificationdelayfollowedbya30second
countdown after abort input deactivation. During the 90 second Alarm verification delay, the system emulates
continuousabortactivation.Afterthe90seconddelay,thesystemstartsa30secondPreͲdischargedelay.

7. SYSTEMCHECKOUT
After system installation per previous chapters, verify system operation to the satisfaction of the authority having
jurisdiction.Asrequired,aRecordofCompletionperNFPA72mustbecompleted.ForsystemsutilizinganARMor
IRMmoduletoreleaseasuppressionsystem,properlydisconnectthereleasingmechanisms(i.e.,initiator,GCA,IVO)
priortotestingtheintegrityofthereleasingcircuit.
Aftertestingiscomplete,checkthesystemforthepresenceofgroundfaults.DonotreͲconnectthereleasingdevice
if any groundfaults are present on the system. This could cause inadvertent activation of the suppression system.
Oncethesystemisfreefromfaultsandisoperatingnormally,connectthereleasingmechanismtothereleasingcircuit
accordingtotheappropriatedocumentation(Seebelow).EnablethereleasingcircuitsviaswitchSW3.

Enable/Disableswitchtothedisablepositionifagroundfaultispresentonthe
system. Depending upon the source of the ground fault, disabling the release

8.5. LowPowerConditions
ACPOWER
ThesystemisdesignedtosuspenddetectoroperationifACpowerismissingandsystembatterypowerfallsbelow20.4V
(“F”trouble)sincedetectoroperationisnotguaranteedatthesevoltages.Systemfielddesignandmaintenanceshould
besuchtopreventthisoccurrence.Afteroccurrence,restartingthesystemrequiresreturnofACpowerinconjunction
withamanualsystemreset.
System will register brownͲout trouble if AC voltage is less than approximately 85% of rating. Both AC power and
battery power are enabled at all times, allowing each to supplement the other. Partial fallͲout of one power source
permitstheothertoprovidemostoftheneededpower.
BATTERYPOWER
The system isdesigned to monitor the batterychargingcircuit.(Olderpanels used to monitor voltage only instead of
current.)Ifthebatteriesdonotmonitorenoughcurrentbeingdrawnbythebatteries,thepanelwillproduceabattery
failuretrouble.
NOTE:DuringanyactiveAlarmorSupervisoryevent,thepaneldoesNOTsuperviseforlossofbatterycharging
current.
8.6. LinearHeatDetectionCable
Linearheatdetection(LHD)cable,forthemostpart,isconnectedtotheSHPͲPro’sDETECT#1andDETECT#2input
circuits.EachcircuitcanbeconfiguredtooperateusingaCrossZone,SequentialorSingleDetectorReleasedetection
scheme, based on project requirements. The operation of the SHPͲPro will vary depending upon the selected
detectionschemeasdescribedbelow.

9. SERVICING
The SHPͲPro system shall be serviced at regular intervals in accordance with the applicable codes and standardsor
moreoftenifrequiredbytheauthorityhavingjurisdiction.OnlyqualifiedindividualsshallperformInspection,Testing,
andMaintenanceoftheSHPͲProsystem.
Fike provides a training class on the SHPͲPro for Factory Authorized Distributors. The training class provides
certificationforInstallation,ServiceandMaintenanceoftheSHPͲPro.Thecertifiedindividualperformingtheservice
musthavealsoreadthisentiremanualandunderstandthebasicsofFireAlarmSystems,codes,andstandards.Before
proceeding with any testing, notify all building occupants and any parties monitoring the Fire Control System.
Notificationmustalsobeperformedattheconclusionofthetesting.
10. Maintenance
Periodicmaintenance,replacement,andtestingshallbeperformedperNFPA72asaminimum.Maintenanceshallbe
performed by a trained or authorized Fike representative. The following components of the SHPͲPro require
replacement,eventhoughnoobvioussignoffailureispresent.
