RGPV School of Architecture Design Competition

“Architecture should speak of its time and place, but yearn for timelessness” –
Frank Gehry.

Architecture, the art and technique of designing and building, as distinguished from the skills
associated with construction. The practice of architecture is employed to fulfil both practical and
expressive requirements, and thus it serves both utilitarian and aesthetic ends. The environment in
which this art is to be studied needs to take a person cerebrally to a place in which one can
experience and learn the skills required by the profession. A school of architecture should be
designed in way where all the five senses are intrigued to feel and consume every aspect of
architecture.
A college building can truly become a school of architecture only when the learning happens with
exchange of ideas both back and forth. It would be incomplete to see an architecture institute
without the display of the outcomes from its students. Could it be any more interesting than to have
an opportunity to design one as per your own imagination?

“How do you want your School of Architecture to look like?”

To answer the above question holistically there are more questions that need to be answered. Have
you thought about –

• Who would be using the building?

• What type of activities shall be carried out?
• What will be the space requirements?
• Is there a possibility of integrating various activities?
• Can a space have multiple usage?
• How can one distinguish the school of architecture from other departments?

The above questions need to be answered through a design proposal depicting your ideas in the form
of drawings and sketches for Architecture Block development. The proposal should have a theme
which should unify and diversify spaces simultaneously. The central theme could be based on –
• Material selection
• Colour schemes
• Style of Art
• Special techniques
• Any other inspiration
