WNA Winch and Controller

General Information

The Mount Sopris WNA winch is a logging hoist capable of positioning a geophysical probe or other tool in a
borehole. The system is equipped with slip rings and connectors, through which surface instrumentation can
communicate with the probe. A precision measuring wheel and depth encoder are also included to allow the
probe depth to be monitored. The cable is automatically wrapped on the drum in even layers through the
level wind mechanism. The motor is controlled by a motor speed controller, which allows the user to vary the
logging speed. The WNA Winch and Winch Control are designed for use with the Matrix or MGX II logging
consoles to achieve a complete logging system.

FIGURE 1

Winch Installation
The MSI 1500M winch should be firmly secured before operation. Mounting holes have been provided in the
runner rails, and each corner should be secured. It may be necessary to remove the motor mount plate to
secure the rear left corner. Three bolts secure the motor mount plate to the runner rails. Four screws in the
sleeve coupler secure the rear jackshaft to the motor gearbox. Loosen all four of these to free the motor
assembly and slide it away from the winch. To re-mount the motor assembly, reverse the process making
sure all four coupler screws are tightened securely. Connect the winch control cable to the control unit.

Winch Setup

To operate the winch in a borehole environment the following steps should be followed:
1.Position the logging vehicle so that the borehole is directly behind the winch. The cable should
deviate no more than 20 left or right. Additionally the cable should not dip more than 15 below
horizontal. The cable path is not limited on its angle above horizontal (up to vertical).

Figure 2
2. Select a gearing range suitable for the type of logging to be done. For most logging applications
the high speed range can be used. However, for heavy probes or very slow speeds the low range
should be selected. The range capabilities are as follows:
Range Max Speed Max Continuous Load Max Instantaneous Load
Low Speed 30 ft/min 600 lbs 800 lbs
High Speed 90 ft/min 250 lbs 300 lbs
4. Attach the probe to the cable head and check to see that the logger and power cables are
connected to the winch control. It is good practice to remove power to the probe before connecting or
disconnecting the cable head. For a complete description of cable connections consult the WNA
SERIES WINCH CONTROL manual.
5. The probe is now ready to log.

Speed Selection

The winch should always be stopped when attempting to change gears. The transmission shaft utilizes a
dovetail clutch to drive the gearing and cannot be dis-engaged under load. If a load is on the cable the brake
should be set and tested to make sure the brake is properly adjusted for the load. SEE BRAKE
ADJUSTMENT. If the brake is set the motor may need to be jogged (ran at a very low speed back & forth) to
free the clutch. The transmission has three positions located by a ball detent on the transmission shaft:
Left High Speed
Center Neutral
Right Low Speed
Move the SPEED SELECTION KNOB to select the desired gear. Always check the mating of the dovetail
coupling visually before releasing the brake.

Brake
The mechanical brake will hold cable loads of up to 800 lbs. To set the brake, rotate the brake lever clock-
wise toward the rear of the winch. The mechanism should lock over center and support the load. The handle
can be adjusted such that the brake locks in a more convenient position if needed.

To Re-Position the Handle

1. Lock the brake SEE FIGURE 4
2. Loosen the 8mm flat head screw holding the linkage arm onto the brake handle axle and rotate the
handle
3. Tighten the screw.

Figure 4

Brake Adjustment
Two adjustments are available for moderating the brake force, the brake disk adjustment and the fine
brake adjustment. The brake disk adjustment is intended for coarse adjustment and should not be
needed until significant pad wear occurs.

Figure 5
Brake Disk Adjustment
1. Shorten the brake linkage arm to its minimum length and rotate the brake handle to its
locked position. SEE FIGURE 5
2. Loosen the brake pad adjustment pad jam nut and back off the screw several turns. SEE
FIGURE 5a
3. Advance the brake pad adjustment screw until the pad begins to grab the brake disk.
4. Lock the screw into this position with the jam nut.
. Proceed to the fine brake adjustment.

Fine Brake Adjustment

1. Lock the brake
2. Using a 7/16 (11mm) open-end wrench lengthen the brake linkage arm (clockwise rotation)
until the desired load is held. 1 - 2 full revolutions should be added for a margin of safety.
3. Lock the jam nut.

Level Wind
The automatic level wind can be geared for 3/16 or 1/4 inch cable (which ever was originally
spooled onto the drum) and the drum width should accommodate 55 wraps of 3/16 cable per
layer (40 wraps for 1/4” cable). If adjustments are needed push in the CLUTCH ADJ.BUTTON
and turn the black LEVELWIND ADJ. KNOB on the opposite end of the level wind ball screw. SEE
ILLUSTRATIONS ON FOLLLOWING PAGE (Figure 6b and 6c)

The CLUTCH ADJ. BUTTON shown in the photo on the left, is pushed in so that the hex-lock on
the level wind shaft is free to be turned using the LEVELWIND ADJ. KNOB (shown in the photo
on the right). You must hold this button in while turning the knob.

Figure 6b and c

When the level wind carriage is positioned as needed release the CLUTCH ADJ.BUTTON and
turn the knob slightly to reengage the clutch. The ball screw is coupled to the drive sprockets
through an index clutch. The rotation of the level wind ball screw is geared to the drum through
the level wind drive train sprockets. Be sure that you check the travel directionof the level wind
carriage after making adjustments, especially if the adjustment is made on the extreme end of
the drum, as the carriage may need to be turned through a “corner” for proper alignment.

Depth Measure System

Depth for the WNA winch is measured using a BEI H20 rotary encoder. Both the measure wheel and the
pinch wheel are free to pivot side to side. This freedom insures that measure wheel will never loose contact
with the cable. The pinch wheel spring maintains approximately 10 lb of contact force between the pinch
wheel and the measure wheel. The Measure wheel diameter is 1/3 M and will deliver 200 pulses/rev. The
tangential path measure system is accurate to 0.1%.

Figure 7

Cable Path
The pivoting front sheave wheel should allow sufficient flexibility when positioning the winch with respect to the
borehole. As mentioned earlier the horizontal angle of the cable can be set 15 below horizon to 90 above
horizon. The off-axis orientation should be kept as close to center as practical. The mechanism will allow for
up to 20 deg off-axis orientation.

Maintenance

Lubrication
The BALL SCREW, the level wind carriage SUPPORT SHAFT, as well as the drum and level wind
drive chain should be lightly lubricated with white lithium grease or 10W30 motor oil. The bearing
supporting the drum and the ball screw are sealed bearings and should not require lubrication.

Chain Maintenance
The drum drive chains should be kept free of excessive slack. To tighten the drive chains loosen
the chain idler sprocket and slide the sprocket axle up in the slots on the side of the winch.

The level wind drive chain does not need to be as tight as the drum drive chain. These chains are
under very little tension and 1/8” of chain slack is acceptable. As the system is used the chains
will develop more slack and can be adjusted be loosening the screw through the center of the axle
of the center sprockets. The eccentric axle will allow the tension for the front and rear chains to
be adjusted independently.

Re-Spooling the Winch

If the winch is ever re-spooled completely or cable is removed from the bottom layer, the following
measures must be observed.
FOR 3/16” CABLE
55 wraps should be put on the bottom layer with a space for half the cable width left over.
Subsequent layers should follow this pattern.
The level wind gearing for 3/16” cable is different from that used for 1/4” cable.

FOR 1/4” CABLE

40 wraps should be put on the bottom layer with a space for half the cable width left over.
Subsequent layers should follow this pattern.
