During the first few days of lockdown people stayed happily in their houses and enjoyed their holidays. But after some days people did not like to stay in their houses and started to feel bored. There are many people who go to work in different cities without their family. In this situation they are not getting money for different purposes. So they are walking back to their home and because of this lockdown they are not getting any transport to travel to long distant cities. These people think that once they come back to their home they will never go back again. They are even walking for four or five days and whenever they see a truck or any other transport they run to ask them for help but nobody takes them. Since all the shops and dhabas are closed they are not getting any food to eat After hearing about their story | felt sad and thought that we are at least comfortable in our houses. After hearing to their pain | also realized we should not complain so much about small things in life because there are many people in our country and in the world who suffers much more than us. The people of the Aztec culture believed that, this tree could grant any wish for a pure human soul. There was a saying written on the tree, in ancient language that, “One who shall feed a pure human soul shall be able to grant a wish”. Many people had tried, but wasn’t successful due to the demand of a pure human soul to be sacrificed to the tree. An earthquake buried the cave along with the divine tree. Later in the 18th century, a poor boy named Miguel was digging a well for water. When he went a few meters down, he came across a branch of a tree which said “One who shall feed a pure human soul shall be able to grant a wish”. ‘Suddenly he noticed a ladder, he decided to use that and climb down. When he reached the end of the ladder, he saw a board with the name of the place written “Underworld”. He turned in the next instance to see a high waterfall with a rainbow above it and many different species of plants and animals. He also noticed a hollow cave with the divine tree inside it. The same was written on the hollow cave as it was on the branch of the tree. Miguel decided to spend some time in the underworld and then climbed the ladder to go up. He decided to keep this as a secret from others except his friend Juan. The next day he and his friend decided to go to the same place, where Miguel went the day before. This time they decided to explore the cave. When they went down to the underworld and inside the cave, they observed the lanterns getting lit up by itself. LOCKDOWN DIARY | 28 Continue reading at next page > There was only one passage which was filled with old paintings and antiques. In a while they finally came across the divine tree. After exploring the magnificent features of the divine tree, both of them noticed a floating door on upmost branch of the tree. Both of them had a hard time climbing up the tree, but it was worth the effort after what happened next. They went inside the room to find an old priest meditating with a humongous beard. Beside him was the tree on one side and a sceptre on another. They decided to introduce themselves to the priest. The priest then asked them if they were here to grant a wish to the tree. Both of them were confused. The priest continued and told them about the past, to make them understand. He also voiced them about a condition in which they had to exchange a soul to grant a wish. Both of them discussed a plan to outsmart the tree and the lest. Later they came to a decision that Juan would sacrifice his soul for the wish which Miguel wanted to be granted. This was done by the wish of Juan, his only true friend. Then it was finally time for Miguel to grant a wish. He demanded to the tree that he wanted “endless wishes”. The first, was to make him rich as he was poor. The second, was to keep his family members, his friends and his loved ones happy and prosperous and the last was to bring his friend Juan back to life. He had also learned that the priest could not leave underworld until any wish was granted successfully. He also wished for the priest to gain freedom to go elsewhere. In this new battle against COVID-19, the centuries old strategy of quarantine is becoming a powerful component of public health. In this era of globalization, where migrations are seen on daily basis, the risk of deadly infectious diseases with pandemic worldwide. potential is increasing It may be disappointing to hear the cancellation of so many events that were likely to draw millions of crowd are the only source to flatten the curve of COVID-19. Since any medicine so far has been impotent against the Corona Virus, the only way to escape this trouble is through social distancing and restricting the movements of the citizens of all nations. There's a popular saying “The Earth has enough for our need but not for our greed.” We are only the inheritors of the Earth’s resources and not the owners. Years before Corona Virus, human life was so busy that we could hardly spare time for our family and children and imaging a life in such a standstill was next to a nightmare! Against its 1 n population, India has only 7 for every 10,000 people. The weak public healthcare system is coupled with crowded often insanitary _ living ns (The population density in India is 464 per square Km while that of china is only 148.35 per square Km) cond The prevailing conditions made it imperative for the Government to impose a lockdown early on to have the best chance at curbing community transmission of Covid-19. Case in point to be noted is the absolute callousness with which many people with foreign travel records dismissed self-isolation orders essentially becoming the first spreaders But | feel India is not dealing with the corona virus satisfactorily due to the following reasons: The lockdown seemed _ hasty, unplanned and lacking proper organisation which led to massive suffering for the masses especially the poor. In spite of getting considerable time to arrange for required supplies needed to fight the now pandemic, Government has only started to arrange the medical infrastructure recently. al level healthcare institutions, th public and private are showing inadequacies with regards to following ICMR guidelines for dealing With Covid-19 patients due to non- percolation and lack of strict imposition. “Zust lockdozn without testing is only postponing the surge.” The complete lockdown —_has potentially transformed the health crisis into a socioeconomic crisis. India's huge unorganised sector which includes daily wage labourers has no means to earn a livelihood and sustain itself. With an almost total halt in production, factory workers have also gone out of work adding to the already existing massive unemployment. LOcKDOWN DIARY | 35 Continue reading at next page > Migrant workers packed buses and trains home, potentially taking the virus into rural areas. And as transport ‘options dried up, many families in New Delhi and other major cities simply began to walk to their distant villages, with little access to food and water. News of the lockdown even caused a surge of panic in the well off population who rushed to stock up ‘on groceries and amenities they regularly need thus causing an immediate hike in prices of fresh produce. The hoarders wiped shelves clean of essential commodities like flour, sugar, handwash soap and sanitizers leaving no stocks for others. But that isn't the worst news. The reduction in production at the beginning of the new fiscal year 2020-2021 will most certainly aggravate the slowing down of the Indian economy, the worst effects may be felt in the later quarters The lockdown makes identification of new cases. of ~— community transmission difficult. Former Indian health secretary K. Sujatha Rao warned that. “Just lockdown without testing is only postponing the surge”. There is a lack of awareness generation campaigns to educate the people on the disease leading to propagation of various myths and superstition. Education is critical to fight misinformation and stigma surrounding the disease. In recent days, apartment complexes have tried to throw out doctors and airline crews. Houses under quarantine are being marked with “Do not visit” posters. The communal undercurrent in how some communities are being singularly blamed for the outbreak is unmistakable and a terrible blow to ationwide unity in these trying imes. News stations and media companies have to play a fair and unbiased role while reporting the situation in hand. The lockdown is an extreme emergency measure. Even after de-imposition there is need to maintain distancing efforts and isolation and in the long run strengthen our public healthcare system while increasing efficiency of the supply chain of essential amenities like rations and medicines. But every cloud has a silver lining. Maybe the best outcome of the lockdown has been a few days of respite for the environment to heal and the reduction in nationwide pollution. My work involves using various challenge mouse models which induce intestinal inflammation, and the effects of activation of this receptor (through dietary ligands) and its deletion, in overcoming the challenge. The recent global situation is reflecting the humane relation of individuals to one another, and is certainly restricted between the working class. As we can see the crony capitalism is still looking after its own in a very pessimistic nature. There is still no such concrete policy of public funding to healthcare or the basic needs of living. The rapid rise of the COVID-19 outbreak and the failure to tackle the situation in the developed countries, is showing the dark side of capitalist exploitation, Now with no escape route it has made blame game the only weapon to fool the most affected fraction of the society for own survival. Referring to the initial quote, the history is pointing towards a more unfortunate fate, an unequal struggle for survival A war for existence - referring Darwin. Healthcare investment and COVID-19 We have seen outbreaks starting from Cholera in 1832 to Spanish flu in 1918 all have reformed the social and political structure from where it spread through. The COVID-19 pandemic has no different characteristic in respect to that. It is triggering the possibilities of worlds societal, political and economic reformation. Amidst these possible outcomes the most rousing concern is healthcare, as most intellectuals including health _—_ workers, political leaders, economists and social scientists are blaming the poor healthcare accessibility as a major cause of this outbreak Where the developed countries like United states are struggling with inaccessible health care, the developing country like India is in an unequal fight due to poor infrastructure. Though the direct causes are different, the driving power of these are same, lower public investment in healthcare system. We can see 50 as US. is suffering the most than other OECD countries in spite of having the highest healthcare investment, LOCKDOWN DIARY | 46 Continue reading at next page > The outrageous rise of cases in Italy, Spain and some other countries of EU can also be justified with this explanation as the growth of the public fraction in health care spending has come to an end since the 1980s, and in a few countries the private fraction even increased substantially. These countries made a sharp shift in more privatised healthcare from late twenty first century with the adoption of neoliberalism in the constitution. COVID-19 isa disease that do not discriminate between the classes but we can clearly see that the backward class is most threatened in this global capital dominated situation. In this global health crisis, the state is shifting out of the working classes side, proving its implication. With approximately zero accessibility to the quality healthcare system, the daily wage labours, the poor are facing the real struggle for survival and this state made situation with deprioritizing the health care needs over the profit for decades is seeming to be responsible for the failure to tackle the pandemic. “SINGLE-PAYER HEALTHCARE CAN'T PREVENT A NOVEL VIRUS LIKE COVID-19 BUT IT COULD HELP US PLAN, COORDINATE AND SAVE LIVES” + THE GUARDIAN Is there any solution? When the capital dominated states are facing serious threat from the pandemic, these governments are somewhat partially adopting the characteristics of a welfare state by subsidizing private sector wages. But still these policies are unable to assure to tackle this situation. Standing in this juncture of social evolution, some small countries like Cuba, Vietnam and a state of India, Kerala is establishing examples of a successful government that prioritize the basic needs of all its citizen for completely or nearly free of cost. Cuba,Vietnam didn’t only internally tackle the situation but also send medical supplies as well as the health workers to the developed countries, what made it possible for countries with less than 10,000 USD income per capita? To address this question, one direction a free universal health coverage and protection of health workers in legislature. In spite of limited resources and tightened United States sanctions, Cuba achieved this centrally controlled free universal healthcare and highest doctors to population ratio in the world. The socialist system of the country made full public Investment possible in the basic necessities like healthcare and education and it is necessary to fight any catastrophe or crisis, mot only COVID-19. As the concerns are roaming around free universal healthcare system all over the world, the crony capitalism is trying to side line the concept by saying UHC a bad and failed policy. It is very easy to understand that the capitalist system will always look for maximising its profit, over the people and thi extreme crony capitalism that we are experiencing today in most of the world, will never opt for a better society where the basic needs of healthcare, education will be accessible to all and free. The corona virus pandemic has forced the nation to rush into a nation-wide lockdown which is unprecedented in the history of this country. Accompanying this lockdown were its evil outcomes, namely unemployment and financial distress, pressure on the medical system, isolation, panic, stress, anxiety, and the list seems to be an unending one. However, among all these problems lies a ticking time bomb, which shi massive health issue if not addressed immediately- mental health and mental wé being To begin with, it is pretty clear now that staying under the roof for this prolonged period of time might not be beneficial for our well-being, and to ‘add to that comes this array of misinformation. One clearly needs to motivate oneself on a daily basis to maintain social distancing and to stay indoors, but the uncouth distortion of the facts around us is making it tough for the people to seek that ‘motivation. Most of the media along with various social networking platforms have shamelessly propagated lies which have only added to the woes of the aam aadmi, the mango people or the common Next factor which affects the mental well-being negatively is the uncertainty that future has in store for us and the accompanying stress of, uncertainty However, there is an interesting thing to note here. The more you try to resist a thought, the ‘more it persists. The more conscious effort we put in to forget that one negative thought which is taking away our night's sleep, the more powerful it grows up to be, only to convert us into insomniacs and gain absolute control over our sanity. Sincerely. we cannot control our feelings and thoughts, especially uncer stress. However, the silver lining to that is wo can control our reactions to such thoughts, This lockdown has presented that time to those who always wanted to start living healthy. A. daily dose of exercise, yoga and meditation drastically improves the physical health as well as the mental health, Finally, let's look at the havoc wrecked by isolation fon the mental well-being of individuals as a consequence of this poorly planned nation-wide lockdown. To aveld turning agoraphobic during the times of isolation, we must practice mindfulness and reach out to the friends and relatives, One can utilize the ample time they have on their hands now to re-establish the connections which they might have lost due to the lack of time. As far as the family is concerned, each and every member of the family must observe not to interfere too much in others’ matters, and leave space for them to cope with this iso LOCKDOWN DIARY | 49 Continue reading at next page > However, somewhere down the line, most of us believe that this lockdown has been implemented in a rather unplanned manner. A bit of meticulous planning would have avoided the financial insecurity being thrust upon millions across the country. We experienced panic migrations of the daily-wagers on multiple occasions as they complained of lack of basic amenities under the lockdown. One cannot help but wonder that the sole purpose of implementing social distancing was lost due to such panic migrations. But this is no time for criticisms and we must ensure to support the Government, help as much as we can, and “P. Before concluding, there is one very important aspect to addross. Wo must all treat the doctors, nurses, health workers and the front-line workers well and pay them the respect they deserve, Ill- treating your doctors and health workers during the times of pandemic (or be it any time) is like gulping down a bottle of hot sauce because the last curry you ate was hot enough to blow the top of your skull off It Is our responsibility to abstain from any type of discrimination and should not participate in this altruism where we see others as a potential threat toone’s Two of my closest friends shaved off their heads completely to see through this lockdown. LOCKDOWN DIARY | 51 LOCKDOWN SPECULATIONS Lockdown. Social distancing. Self isolation. Quarantine. These words sound so familiar today don't they? We are sitting at our homes glued to four laptop screens, watching some new web series or reading some favorite ebook, listening to music or busy video calling friends. These are all distractions. Distractions from what? From the stress of not being able to do something about ‘our PhD project- no experiments, no going to lab. no presentation to make for lab meetings. But one minute, weren't these themselves the causes of acute stress back at our university campus? Meeting deadlines for showing progress report to supervisor. staying late night for those cell culture experiments or coming early morning to stop that ‘overnight reaction that was set, these were indeed so exhausting. We were so used to counting days for the next holidays to sit and relax at our hostel rooms or may be come back home until now when we are actually forcefully sent back home from our hostels due to this Coronavirus care that has gripped the world with fear. These words come from a fairly new PhD student who has Joined her PhD in Biomedical Engineering at IT Bombay in July 2019. After a semester of coursework, of attending theory classes, | had just begun designing experiments for my proposed project and started learning lab techniques, going to lab with a lot of enthusiasm as is always the case in the beginning. | had started making a plan of how to utilize the months that lay ahead of me until my first APS (Annual Progress Seminar) scheduled for August-September 2020. Abhinanda Kar, PhD student, Biomedical Engineering, ITY Bombay As the Coronavirus started spreading globally and increasing number of cases were detected in Mumbai, mid-March we were told to suspend all research activities and come back home. Initially Iwas happy to be back to my family. enjoying the home food, relaxing with parents, But as the days turned to weeks, the feeling of clock ticking away started sinking in. | started feeling less productive sitting at home as if spending my summer holidays like 2 school chile. Some of my batchmates who belong to computational biology or bioinformatics labs still can make some progress sitting with computers at home: but my work entails performing many experiments from the very beginning. One can say that | can utilize my time at home reading research papers, improving my research topic and get more ideas, but that is ‘often not enough. Unless | can see some pilot ‘experiments giving preliminary data, what will be the motivation to go ahead? Even reading papers isn't a very happy job. All | can think of after reading those day and night is that so much work people have done, what breakthrough am | going to achieve in this fleld? This feeling at times is a lot depressing than getting negative results of experiments in the lab. When we see labs globally and across the country ‘working tirelessly towards developing vaccines and conducting Covid-19 research, as students of science this has an even bigger effect on our thought process, We are sitting at home with no scope of research ‘work, our own projects are lying untouched for weeks, and with the pandemic spreading with each passing day we cantt see any date in near future when we are called back to renew our work LOCKDOWN DIARY | 52 Continue reading at next page > Many a times | get that extreme feeling that my PhD will be delayed, what will happen if the lockdown extends to almost the end of this year? May be these concerns will turn out false but an empty mind is indeed a devils den. The only relatively comforting thought for me is that my research project is just in the pre taking-off stage. the worries are greater for students who were the middle of crucial experiments or even those towards the end, who were working day and night to wind up their work and submit their thesis this year, In effect the lockdown as a result of the Covid-19 crisis has hampered the ongoing research of PhD scholars across the world, posing different challenges to students at different stages of their work. It indeed causes mental stress. with apprehensions of post Covid progress. | hope we all get over this phase soon and are back to taking the lab stress that now feels better than the “nothing to do’ stress.
