Through the video we can see that the Internet has had a huge impact on the cable
television industry. Does the cable TV industry have a solution to compete with online
TV? We invite you to our group's Case Study.
SUMMARY
The impact of the Internet on the cable television industry
For the TV industry: Widespread use of high-speed Internet access, powerful PCs with
high-resolution displays, iPhones, iPads, other portable handheld devices, and file-
sharing services makes it faster and easier for users to download video content from
movies and TV shows. Some TV shows are illegally downloaded for free. But the
Internet is also providing new ways for broadcasters to distribute and sell their content,
which they are trying to capitalize on.
The founding of youtube
Youtube was founded in 2005. And quickly became the most popular video sharing
website in the world. Although YouTube's original mission was to provide an outlet for
amateur filmmakers. But a lot of exclusive content from TV shows appears on YouTube
without the studio's permission. Viacom claimed in a 2008 lawsuit that more than
150,000 unauthorized clips of its copyrighted TV shows appeared on YouTube.
YouTube tries to prevent its users from posting illegal clips by limiting the length of
videos to 10 minutes each and by removing videos when requested by the copyright
owner, implementing video ID filtering technology and digital fingerprinting to filter
unauthorized videos before they appear on the YouTube website.
The appearance of web-videos
The TV industry is also making a comeback using the Internet as its other content
delivery system. Television networks like NBC Universal, Fox, and CNN have put TV
shows on their own Web sites. In March 2007, NBC Universal, News Corp (owner of
Fox Broadcasting) and ABC Inc. founded Hulu.com, a video streaming site for TV shows
and movies from NBC, Fox, ABC, Comedy Central, PBS, USA Network, Bravo, FX,
Speed, Sundance, Oxy, Onion News Network and other networks. The site is supported
by advertisements and much of its content is free.
Content from all of these sites is viewable via iPhone. Hulu has succeeded in bringing
streaming TV into the mainstream. It dominates the market for watching full-length TV
online, with more than 44 million monthly visitors, according to online measurement
company comScore. Monthly video streams more than tripled in 2009, reaching over 900
million in January 2010.
The trend of unsubscribing from cable TV
Hulu has blocked services like Boxee from trying to bring Hulu to TV screens, because
that would lure subscribers away from cable and satellite companies, reducing their
revenue. The fact that there are so many free shows on the web from services like Hulu,
programs that can be downloaded from iTunes, videos that subscribe to mailing services
like Netflix, etc. led to viewers canceling their cable TV subscriptions to watch TV
online. By 2010, nearly 800,000 households in the United States were "cutting the cord,"
selling their cable, satellite, or high-speed TV service from telecom companies like
Verizon's FiOS or AT&T's U-Verse.
Cable operators take advantage of the Internet
In July 2009, cable operator Comcast Corporation began a pilot program to bring some of
Time Warner's network programming, including TBS's My Boys and TNT's The Closer,
to the Web. By offering more TV programming online, but only to cable subscribers,
cable networks hope to maintain and possibly expand the cable TV subscription model in
an increasingly digital world. number. Cable TV programmers can earn more advertising
revenue from their online content because viewers can't skip ads on TV shows streamed
from the Web like they do with TV traditional.
Hulu's Difficulties
Even though it generated over $100 million in ad revenue within two years, it remained
unprofitable. Other companies offering Hulu content have pressured the company to
make even more advertising dollars and set up a subscription service that requires
consumers to pay a monthly fee.
On June 29, 2010, Hulu launched a HuluPlus service. For $9.99 per month, paid
subscribers get the full current season of Glee, The Office, House and other shows from
ABC, Fox, and NBC stations, as well as all previous seasons of several series. Paid
subscribers will receive the same amount of advertising as those using the free Web site
to keep subscription costs low. Paid subscribers can also watch shows in high definition
and on multiple devices, including mobile phones and video game consoles, as well as
TV screens.
