THE FOURTH GRADE GAZETTE
Dear families,
We had another busy week in fourth grade! Students have been
busy writing their first narrative writing piece, experiencing
hands-on learning in science, and finished up our first math unit.
Don’t forget to sign your child up for band/orchestra if they are

ELA
We‘ started off the week by
exploring the writing process
through the creation of an unknown
creature with Play Doh. After this
activity, students wrote a story
about their creatures! They went
through the writing process with
their story, establishing character
traits for their main character. On
Wednesday, we discussed the
revision process and how writers
have to choose their words
carefully and focus on the most
detailed and interesting words. The
students then applied more “juicy”
words within the own writing.
We took our second Vocab, Spelling
and Grammar test this week. The
Week 3 test will be Friday 10/1.
Students should be working on their
Choice Boards in Google Classroom
to practice!
Math
This week’s lessons were centered
around reviewing all of the
multiplication and division
strategies. The students took their
first Unit Post-Assessment on
Wednesday. Following the post-
assessment, students learned
about linear forms of
measurements, weight and mass
through hands-on measuring.
Next week, the students will begin
Unit 2 and complete the pre-
assessment.

Students continued to learn about
seed dispersal, pollination, and
photosynthesis in the classroom ★Wednesday 9/29:
this week. We also learned how to Bus Evacuation Drill during PE
classify animals this week as well
as plants.
We also looked at how vascular ★ Friday 10/1:
plants transport water with Week 3 Spelling, Vocabulary,
carnations split into two different and Grammar test
vases (red food coloring in one
vase, blue food coloring in the
other). Students saw how the
colored water was sucked up
through the plant and changed the Links:

We also set up an experiment to
observe photosynthesis with a bean
plant growing inside a shoe box.
Students will check on it next week
to see what happens with a limited Band/Orchestra Sign Up
amount of sunlight!

Second Step (SEL)
The focus this week was on being Ms. Lee (Orchestra)
assertive. We discussed the leeh@hawthorn73.org
differences between being passive,
aggressive and assertive.
Students watched a video where Mr. Fritz (Band)
they were able to see these fritzc@hawthorn73.org
differences in a scenario on the
playground. They were also able
to practice responding to different
situations assertively.
