Conversation Starter
Using small objects or coins, model addition problems such as 2 ! 3,
4 ! 5, or 6 ! 5. Be sure the numbers in each addition problem add up
to 20 or less. Discuss with your child that the order of the numbers
UNIT

does not change the sum. For example, 2 ! 3 is the same as 3 ! 2.
Then, continue the discussion to include adding three numbers, such
as 2 ! 5 ! 3. Work together to write all the addition examples you
worked with.

On the Go
While traveling, have your child practice finding the unknown number
in an addition or subtraction equation by asking questions such as, It is
5 miles to the grocery store. We drove 3 miles. How many more miles

do we have to drive? Or We walked 4 blocks to the library. Then we
walked 3 blocks to the supermarket. How many blocks did we walk
altogether? In the space below, have your child write addition or
subtraction equations to solve each problem you created.
